What's Wrong With The Atkins Diet?
May 18th 2006 11:52
Everyone has heard of this infamous fad diet which took the world by storm as it was popularised by Hollywood celebrities including Jennifer Aniston and Geri Halliwell. The diet was made famous by Dr Atkins when he published a book entitled Dr Atkins’ Diet Revolution in the early seventies.
The rationale behind the Atkins diet is a high protein intake and severely reduced carbohydrate intake. This is partially where the current fear of carbs comes from. It is based on the flawed belief that both carbohydrates and sugars increase the release of insulin which causes weight gain. Countless health professionals have discredited Atkins’ logic.
It’s a mazing that such a stupid diet could become so popular. But then, I suppose its not really that amazing…After all, Big Brother and Australian Idol are also popular…
Despite all the controversy around this dangerous diet, some Atkins branded products are still popular and available through the official website. It stocks an Atkins branded variant of those suspicious protein shakes and nutrition breakfast bars. The website also includes a carb counter so you can be extra obsessive about everything you put in your mouth, and ‘free online tutorials’ in healthy nutrition. There are also quite a few recipes there which are free to use. They’re essentially not bad, if you ignore the ingredients that are Atkins line products and substitute everything that are substitutes for sugar with its original form, ie. Sugar.
Apparently Dr Atkins is documented as having wrote, "Martin Luther King had a dream. I, too, have one."
Atkins suffered a cardiac arrest during his lifetime and his dieting theories have been thoroughly debunked since their release. While this diet is no longer taken serious by most people today, it is still a major example of a low carbohydrate diet that has contributed to today’s common misconception that carbohydrates are very bad for you and lead to weight gain.
There's a book documenting the truth behind low carb craze which is out through Amazon.

I'm following the G.I. diet at the moment - another celebrity diet but the scientific grounding seems fairly sound and it has received alot of support from nutritionalists. Unfortunately beer isn't allowed, which is clearly a mistake...
