Food - May 2006

Vice Food Dudes

May 29th 2006 12:12
Have you ever heard of food dudes?

They are just that, dudes made out of foods. These images were used in the food issue of Vice magazine. Vice magazine is a free monthly street press publication that can be obtained internationally from places like alternative music stores and clothing outlets. The magazine generally features different controversial articles on the monthly theme, as well as regular sections such as ‘tidbits’ and ‘dos & don’ts’.

Another regular feature are the fashion spreads they do in each issue. These are designed exactly like the fashion photography usually found towards the centre of other cosmopolitan consumer magazines, though the models are usually real people in real situations. In this issue, the images are still styled using the conventions of fashion photography; an unobtrusive caption that says “Adidas track pants, Algierz Gear T-shirt”, the images are crisp and the models are dressed casually and pose in a relaxed manner. The only difference is, the models are food. This is not only a great commentary on fashion photography at large, but also a really talented artistic venture. Its no mean feat to balance piles of pizza, pasta, toast, bacon and fruit loops in a shape resembling a human without them disintegrating or being chased by dogs. Shame about the waste of tasty tidbits though. Then again, maybe they donated it to a homeless shelter after the shoot or something.

Hence the name ‘food dudes’.

Ice cream face looks cool in designer blue tracky dax. You’ll be so sweet you’ll simply melt any love object that comes your way in this sexy black jacket with a wild plush tiger print trim. Whether it be on the street, in a café or within the comfort of your holiday lodge, you just feel so comfortable in these versatile designs. You are what you eat.

The second fashion spread is a food fight. All images are from the Vice website. More food dudes can be found on the vice website, where the whole magazine is also published free.

It is believed that the use of low-resolution images in this context
• to illustrate the publication of the issue of the magazine in question,
• with the publication name either visible on the image itself or written in the image description above,
on the www.foodherald.com hosted on a server in Australia by www.orble.com , qualifies as fair use under Australian copyright law.
