This Is What I Ate- Patrick Boland Exhibition
July 23rd 2007 06:11
Over a year photographer Patrick Boland documented his daily digestion by photographing each meal he consumed. The result is a fascinating ‘food diary’ which includes 365 dinners, 362 lunches, 359 breakfasts and 219 substantial snacks. This is a total of 1305 pictures!
His meals are not the gourmet couture that we are used to see in sparkling images, instead they are the fare of the everyman, burgers, pizzas and cookies. And another very cute addition, Boland’s hopeful dog can be spotted in the background of almost every picture.
Sadly I missed this exhibition which was at the (very aptly named) Medium rare gallery on Regent Street.
I feel like this is what I already do to a lesser extent. I have to endure groans of complaint every time I produce my camera after trying out a new recipe or restaurant. In fact, I am now officially banned from bringing my camera on a ‘date’.
I feel I can empathise, as surely Patrick’s family chastised him in the same way as he adjusted the lighting and arranged garnish as his dinner grew steadily colder.
Boland elaborates on the conceptual structure behind the project on his website:
