The Witching Well Cafe, Pai (Thailand)

Let me tell you about a magical place I visited recently.
Nestled away in the mountains of Thailand there is a lovely bohemian town called Pai, about four hours North of Chaing Mai. I will hopefully have a chance to say more about the exquisite culinary delights of this town at a later date, because the whole place is a haven for artists, hippies, musos and foodies. There is an overabundance of little cafes, restaurants and bars with strange and varied specialities, usually accompanied by music and art.
One such place is called the Witching Well. It certainly looks magical, with epiphyte roots falling across the grotto interior. As the name suggests, it is a popular place for neo-pagans and Wiccans to congregate and mingle with passing tourists. Pai has a strong ‘farang’ (Westerner) scene as the quiet yet stimulating location attracts people from all over the globe.

The thing that actually surprised me most about this little gem is that it serves only deserts! What a brilliant idea (Already I’ve exposed myself as having a weakness for sweet things). These include a selection of mouth watering cakes, cookies, crème brulee, brandy snaps and fruit salads. I tried the chocolate mud cake, recommended by the owner as being their most popular dish. It was rich and delectable as promised, and I can see why it has become so popular amongst tourists in Pai. Thai people do not generally have much of a sweet tooth and a rich chocolate mud cake is a rare and precious treat for the homesick.
Another specialty of the cafe is its range of magic potions. They serve several potions including ‘dream’, ‘love’ and ‘psychic power’ inspiring brews. They are colourful little collections of herbs, chosen for their magical properties and served in the form of a tea, either by the cup or pot. My German friend who I dined with drank an entire pot of love potion with the attitude that it couldn’t hurt to try it.
She did in fact meet a handsome young Thai man that night and didn’t return to our dorm. I’m not sure as to whether this actually culminated in love, or whether it was simply the more carnal variety. Needless to say, she was very pleased with herself when I teased her about not coming back that night.
Here’s a do-it-your-self potion to enhance psychic awareness:
Ingredients:
• 3 Parts Rose Petals
• 2 Parts Yarrow
• 1 Part Cinnamon
Method:
Dry out these ingredients in the oven if not already in a dry form. Place them in a teapot full of hot water and leave for three minutes for the essence to infuse. Strain out the solids and drink the liquid before or during psychic work to enhance your psychic ability. The left over ingredients should keep well if stored in an airtight container.
