The Treehouse, Lonely Beach, Ko Chang

The Treehouse is one of those amazing gems that sparkles when you find it and bears no comparison anywhere else. Two minutes between my bungalow and the beach this was my ideal breakfast destination directly from my morning swim in the climbing sun. The most magical thing about dining at this time of day is that it’s high tide- meaning that the whole restaurant is suspended above the ocean. The outdoor dining area is built entirely on wooden platforms just above the water level. These are scattered with colourful cushions for comfort when eating at the low tables overlooking the water.
Another delight is that several species of small fish can be seen lulled along by the movement of the tide just beneath you. I made a bad choice from the menu one morning, a ‘Thai style omelette’ which tasted like an egg pocket saturated in sweet chilli sauce, but was moderately consoled by the fact that I could feed it to the fish by pushing it over the side. At least they seemed to enjoy it, worked up into a frenzy in competition with one another for the spoils. In the picture you can see the fish if you look very carefully- there is one just left of the centre with a long nose and a stripy one towards the top.
But it’s not all bad. On another occasion I had the most mouth wateringly delicious rice porridge I have ever tasted. Somehow combined with banana, cinnamon and crushed peanuts it was just fantastic with my big mug of fresh coffee. And the fruit shakes are another treat not to be missed, though be cautioned that when they say ‘orange’ they mean mandarin. I don’t know what they call real oranges. I also hear they do barbeques with fresh, local seafood some nights, which I was pretty sad to miss.
There is also another dimension to the Treehouse as it becomes a popular night hot spot after dark. They play music which can be a bit hit and miss as well as serve a range of drinks from the bar. These include the infamous buckets which are popular with tourists throughout Thailand. This basically involves a plastic sand pail filled with a bottle of whisky (usually the commonplace ‘Sangsom’), a bottle of guarana drink, something carbonated and fruit juice. A lesson that some people should learn is that they serve it to you with several straws to suggest that you SHARE IT!
