The Red Heifer Grill and Carvery

Possibly Newcastle’s best meat house. Possibly Newcastle’s only meat house. I’m not that familiar with Newcastle and I’m told Darby street is good for cafes but the Red Heifer Grill and Carvery is one of the only and certainly the most prominent establishment on Hunter Street around the Civic station side of town.

The name sounds vaguely obscene, but don’t be put off. The bistro areas are quite nice if you can get past the bogans in the attached bar and TAB, and if none of them have found there way out to the beer garden and are lurking there. All in all I suppose its quite family friendly, there’s an indoor kids play area that rivals McDonald’s in size and activities. You can take a virtual tour on the website and see for yourself.
Our friend went to go and find menus and when he came back he told us that this is what the lady said: “We only give out menus on weekends. So what you do is come up to the counter and order. Then you get a buzzer, and when its ready you come and get YOUR MEAT.” Lucky none of us were vegetarians.
So we all had meat and it was pretty good and relatively inexpensive. I had the roast of the day with vegetables at $13.50. It was quite nice lamb in slices with some roasted vegetables and I couldn’t finish it all. This was fortunate because I was dining with two impoverished vultures who happily fell upon the remains.
Another of the company had a surf and turf kind of deal for somewhere around $20 which was a huge steak with some succulent prawns balanced on top. There’s also several $10 weeknight specials, including roasts on Mondays and Tuesdays, stir fry on Wednesdays and chicken schnitzel on Thursdays.
I'm afraid I have to admit that we also went back there the following afternoon for a quiet drink. We discovered little narrow courtyard areas, perhaps for those who want to enjoy drinking outdoors without being too outdoors. They kind of remind me of the orang-utan enclosures as Taronga zoo. (This is not supposed to be a comment on the looks of my companions.)
Overall it was a good place for a hearty feed. It’s certainly nothing fancy but if you are just out for some food, have a beer at a regular price and lounge about in a casual atmosphere then The Red Heifer is not a bad place to do so.
