The Paragon Cafe Katoomba

Built in 1916 the Paragon Cafe’s décor reflects the art deco charm of a roaring 20s saloon. Dark wood paneling highlighted with carved designs are a luscious setting for chocolatey indulgence.

The interior is always a little dingy, and always busy. While the front of the shop mostly serves chocolate gift boxes to take away customers, there is also a café area filled with booths at the back.
Above the shop itself is the chocolate factory where all the goodies are created. We sampled a cappuccino chocolate, a walnut praline, dark cherry and a cute little one shaped like a mushroom. All were quite expensive, as couture chocolates tend to be. I think we paid over $10 for six. The iced coffee and banana smoothie went great with the chocolates which I nibbled away at inch by inch.
The public reviews found on ChefMoz are mostly very unfavourable. I did not find the service to be exceptionally good, but neither was it exceptionally bad. I unfortunately cannot comment on the food as we only snacked. However the basic trend of opinions appeared to be that the Paragon had declined from its former glory, yet still succeeded in luring in tourists and passing trade with its historic legacy.
I am still undecided on this point, and you will simply have to visit and decide for yourself!
