The Norfolk Island Cookery Book

The Norfolk Island Cookery Book was given to me as a souvenir by a holiday maker. It’s is a little cardboard and paper number, but very quaint, imbued with the charm of local knowledge. It was compiled by members of the Sunshine Club, a group committed to enriching the lives of elderly residents, and the book reflects this character.
It is full to the bring with funny idiosyncratic recipes including jellies, puddings and chutneys. All these are arranged, rather oddly by their primary ingredient, so there is a section for banana recipes, as well as different areas for fish, corn and paw paw.
The book contains many recipes, some of which have little or no explanation or description, for example the mysterious and humorously named “Flummery.” Or perhaps the “Lemon Cheese” whose only amendment is the word ‘delicious’ in brackets and a one sentence method. And as a final touch the book also contains a list of local words and phrases and their translations! Did you know “pilly pilly” is Norfolk for stuck together?
Not only is the Norfolk Island Cookery Book a useful resource for the kitchen but you feel that you also possess a little piece of Australian history that was lovingly compiled by those who lived it.
