The Mercantile Hotel @ the Rocks

I first visited the Mercantile because my bus driver's Irish band has a residency playing there monthly on Sundays. It is a comfy old place, nestled in the heart of Sydney's historic Rocks district.

It is so popular that on St Patrick's day it was simply not possible to enter, and on weekends people can be seen spilling out the door and onto the outdoor seating area and surrounding street. They often have live music and other activities like karaoke, making it a popular place to visit.
The burgers come in at around the $10 mark, but in the Rocks this is a cheap meal. But by any standards the Mercantile burger is great value as it is so humongous that no one could humanly be hungry after polishing one off. They are a gourmet style burger with a beef patty AND bacon rashers as well as a large helping of hot chips. For the more distinguished taste the prawn and mango salad is also excellent, with plenty of big juicy prawns. The pumpkin soup and Irish stew are also both very tasty.
And all of these go down well with a beer or a serve of the delicious cider they have on tap. A nice place for a quiet meal during the week or a rowdy night on the weekend.
