The Happy Chef Newtown

A cheap and casual place to get a feed on King Street. Not the prettiest spot, but there’s plenty of room inside for large groups and some people swear by it. Having been there for several years now the Happy Chef has become part of the local landscape and has developed a solid clinetel of bustling diners on any night of the week.

The food is comfortable Chinese; large servings, piping hot and satisfying. Mind you, one of our company ate almost 3 meals so perhaps my perception of ‘large servings’ is skewed. And the choices are dizzying. Virtually any meal is accompanied by chicken, beef, pork or tofu and two walls are virtually covered with different dishes and the various combinations left me standing moronically for minutes trying choose.
The food was tasty with lots of yummy chunks of meat and vegetables. The tofu was especially nice fried and the laksa was really good with a delicate flavour and just the right amount of spice-i-ness.
And of course its cheap as chips, making the perfect night out if the cupboard is bare or you don’t feel like cooking (and you can’t coerce your partner into cooking).
