The cost of food continues to rise
October 4th 2007 04:35
It has already become apparent to most that the cost of food in Australia has been slowly creeping upwards and it is said that it will continue to rise steeply. The drought is the primary reason for this hike, and in particular the grain industry of Eastern Australia has been affected.
Woolworths heavyweight Michael Luscombe says that we have not yet reached the full impact of the drought and can expect further price increases as suppliers have been presuring retails distributers such as Woolworths to increase prices and modify contracts in response to environmental factors.
Obviously low income earners will be the first to be affected, as students, marginal groups and single parent families already struggle as the cost of living has increased. This will not only lead to poorer health and nutrition but also further increase the divide between rich and poor, concreting the class structure.
