Suan I-San Thai Newtown
December 22nd 2006 09:36
It's often difficult when in Newtown to find the right Thai restaurant. King street must have about a hundred different choices all within walking distance of each other. Suan I-San is one of the Southern most Thai places, beyond Newtown Performing Arts on the way down to the Princes Highway. You could probably reach it in about ten minutes walking from Newtown station.
The restaurant itself is also definitely one of the more attractive Thai places in Newtown. It's surprisingly spacious inside, lavishly decorated with all kinds of knick knacks. There's also a gorgeous room partially separated from the main area that's strewn with cushions for dining at low tables, Thai style, with sequined tapestries covering the walls.
Suan I-San supplies the usual Thai fare various forms of satay, stir fries and
laksa, usually with a choice of beef, chicken, pork or seafood. And of course that classic Westerner's favourite, Pad Thai. Actually my time in Thailand taught me that a favourite dish in America is 'Papaya Salad' which was on the menu here. However, I advised that no one order it as it tastes absolutely awful as I do not believe that unripe papaya, garlic, chilli and prawns are a very good combination for salad.
As we were a large group we decided to order a range of different dishes and share them all. Amongst these were seafood stir fry, duck in red curry, green curry, fried noodle, BBQ chicken and hot pork salad. As you can see each main is colourful and very well presented. My party agreed that they were as flavoursome and filling as they look. Indeed we were most surprised that price was still that of a normal take away serving- because each separate main was humungous and way too much for any one person to finish. We all left extremely satisfied and will probably return again sometime soon.
