Spinach Can Reduce Skin Cancer Risk

December 9th 2006 06:11
So Popeye was really on to something! Not only does spinach contain lots of iron for Popeye style muscle building super strength, it also contains a wealth of nutrients which can halve the chance of a relapse amongst skin cancer patients, recent research suggests.

"Green leafy vegetables are good sources of folic acid, vitamins A, C and E, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, and other components which may help boost the skin's natural defence against damage caused by UV rays," Dr van der Pols said.”

With the risk of skin cancer continually growing within Australia as global warming continues to destroy our ozone protection, preventative diets have never been more important. The epidermis is the body’s largest organ and healthy skin, though often overlooked, is an essential part of a healthy body.

If you are concerned about the risk of skin cancer, there are other preventative measures you can take. A wealth of useful information can be found on the Australian Cancer Council website. http://www.cancer.org.au

And for a bit of fun, why not try your hands at a delicious lemon and chilli spinach pie? This classic family recipe is so delicious even Popeye would be jealous!

Hi Shani!

Nice article about the spinach. It's very interesting to know that some of the greenest things that many try to avoid are really good for our health,.

Seemed that you have been here longer than me. I shall slowly visit your yummy recipes, and I will sure try to make that yummy pie you just introduced in the article one day.

I guess that bok choy, cabbage and so on must be just about as good?
Have you come across any decent baked goat recipes? Each Christmas our family like to try something different and as we come from so many diverse ethnic backgrounds now nothing seems to be taboo. I came across rolled shoulder of goat at our local butcher. I know it is very lean but to add what kind of fat? we need a good basting fat to get those great brown crunchy baked potatoes. We will be using a wood fired pizza oven.
cheers

Thanks for your comment! I have to admit I have never cooked goat before. All I can suggest is that if you maybe treated the goat like these lamb shanks they may be as tender and yummy.

Good luck and good on you for trying though!
