Microwavable 'Amoy' Shrimp Shaomai

Amoy Shrimp Shaomai

Shaomai (also siu mai or siew mai) is a traditional Chinese dim sum served at 'yum cha' in many Chinese restaurants.

The ingredients are a combination of seasoned ground pork, whole and chopped shrimps, and finely diced Chinese black mushroom with an outer covering made of a thin sheet of lye water dough.

Along with har gau (shrimp dumplings), shaomai is a must-have at yum cha for me personally. Together with a small dollop of XO Sauce, it is pure gastronomic heaven!

Much to my delight, I recently stumbled across some microwavable shrimp shaomai by leading Hong Kong food manufacturer Amoy. The shaomai comes frozen in a pack of 10 and can either be heated in a microwave or steamed to perfection. Quite frankly, I could not look past the microwave option because it is just way too simple - just cut off a corner of the wrapper and set the microwave to 'high' for 1 1/2 minutes and it's done!

It tastes great! Sure, it lacks a bit of texture and the size is small when compared with the restaurant offerings but at just $3.50 a pack, you get yummy instant shaomai in 1 1/2 minutes - it would be rude to complain!

With the second pack, I tried the steamed option which basically involves steaming the shrimp shaomai with the original tray provided for 8 - 10 minutes and the difference with microwaving was negligible so I will be sticking with the quicker and easier option from now on.

The Amoy Shrimp Shaomai is available in the frozen foods section of most Asian grocery stores.

i'm sure it tastes relatively good, but all this instantaneous cooking of yummy products is dulling our senses on the taste of quality food.

still, as a starving uni student the price is right!

It is quality - for those on a budget or in need of a quick fix of shaomai!

Try it and you'll like it...
