Review - Luddy’s Sutherland
June 14th 2006 10:08
The first thing you notice about Luddy’s is the ever enticing window display. The glass case is filled with delicate pastries and sweet delights, beckoning you inside. These include caramel slices, lamingtons, meringues, cherry pie and scones.
Located conveniently on the Princes Highway opposite Sutherland train station, Luddy’s must tempt hundreds of passers by each day. They do get a lot of passing trade who discover further tantalising terrors inside. The cabinet beneath the counter is filled with a collection of heavy looking cakes which are available by the slice with a cup of coffee or whole for parties and functions.
The interior is pleasant with a couple of tables and chairs for dining in, but the location makes it an ideal stop for a pastry to cheer you up on the dreary train ride home or to work.
The service is warm and genuine. As many customers are locals, the atmosphere is friendly as people enquire about recent babies or wave through the window as they walk past.
The chocolate and hazelnut scrolls are a little too tasty. They are made from sweet, softened pastry packed with thick powdered chocolate and crushed hazelnuts. I felt decidedly ill after eating a whole one and resolved to resist and only eat half next time.
