Cafe Della Piazza Canberra

February 6th 2007 10:47
This is yet another of the little places we stopped at during our recent Canberra foray.

Café Della Piazza
19 Garema Place
Canberra City
02 6248 9711

The mission was to find an iced coffee to both soothe and invigorate in the late morning which has already become sweltering hot.

Iced coffees can be funny. They should be slightly bitter yet refreshing, and become sweet and thick by the end of the drink. In the USA an iced coffee is simply the disgusting combination of coffee and ice cubes, but for me it should also contain ice cream, cream and maybe some syrup or something dusted on top.

Cafe Della Piazza is a small café in Canberra’s CBD nestled amongst a couple of similar places. It is relatively nondescript so we were lucky to select it from amongst the others. Its nice to sit outside and infinitely better than eating in the Westfield only minutes away.

I was delighted to find that the iced coffee was fabulous! I need not have steeled myself for disappointment as it was everything I wanted, with the addition of coffee dusted on top for a bitter contrast with the cream. The iced chocolate was also scrumptious, thick and very sweet.

Hudsons of Dickson Canberra

January 24th 2007 10:39
Hudsons of Dickson is located in the courtyard area of a little shopping village in Dickson, near the humourously named bakery, Dickson Cakes. We dined outside under leafy trees which was nice since later in the day it actually reached a sweltering 40 degrees Celsius. The inside also looked cute and cozy for the colder months.

Nut' N Fancy Parramatta

December 30th 2006 06:27
Another one of the many cafes lining Parramatta’s Church Street, Nut N Fancy stands out from the others- particularly due to its bright orange décor. The interior is very modern And clean- and orange. A plasma screen displays contemporary food designs and large letters and fish tanks decorate the walls.

Suan I-San Thai Newtown

December 22nd 2006 09:36
It's often difficult when in Newtown to find the right Thai restaurant. King street must have about a hundred different choices all within walking distance of each other. Suan I-San is one of the Southern most Thai places, beyond Newtown Performing Arts on the way down to the Princes Highway. You could probably reach it in about ten minutes walking from Newtown station.

The Fisherman’s Katch Coffs Harbour

December 14th 2006 04:44
This choice was the fruit of almost fifteen minutes strolling up and down the promenade scrutinizing menus, short-listing and culling. So I’ll be damned if we made a bad choice. Fisherman’s Katch is open 7 nights from 6pm and open on weekends from 8am. Their slogan is “Steak, seafood, pasta”.

Oliver's Freeway Food

December 1st 2006 10:07
Oliver’s is probably one of the only places that is decent to eat at if you want to make a quick pit stop while trying get from A to B up or down Australia’s eastern coastline. Flanked by a McDonald’s and convenience store, there’s not a lot of competition. Personally I can’t abide the usual food you have settle for while road tripping so Oliver’s is a welcome relief.

Bogey Hole Cafe Newcastle

November 15th 2006 02:20
I have to admit I was in a bit of a bad mood when I visited the Bogey Hole Café in Newcastle. I’d been locked out from my holiday house for about 3 hours and was still dragging around all my stuff. A text message instructed me to meet a stranger in the café at a certain time to pick up the keys.

Despite the frisky wind and the terrible allergies it provoked, my constantly running, itchy nose didn’t prevent me from smelling all the tantalising aromas wafting about.

Latteria Cafe Darlinghurst

October 14th 2006 05:38
Latteria is a strange little place that had no real divisions between inside outside, kitchen or dining areas. The café seemed to have previously been a store room or something as it was really nothing more than a narrow space between two shops. Along the side of the space the waitresses and cook shuffled to prepare and serve the food using the appliances that lined the sides. Necessarily due to space restrictions most of the seating was on the footpath, but I don’t know what they would do in the event of rain.

The Red Heifer Grill and Carvery

October 6th 2006 03:07
Possibly Newcastle’s best meat house. Possibly Newcastle’s only meat house. I’m not that familiar with Newcastle and I’m told Darby street is good for cafes but the Red Heifer Grill and Carvery is one of the only and certainly the most prominent establishment on Hunter Street around the Civic station side of town.
