Harry's Corner Cafe Airlie Beach

November 13th 2007 11:08
With promises of being ‘hangover friendly’ and ‘great coffee’, we settled on Harry's Corner for our breakfast choice this morning.

So far, so good. The coffee was the best we had so far. I had a hazelnut latte and Stu had a double shot latte, and both were so yummy we each had an iced coffee after that. Actually, we had the iced coffees because our meals still hadn’t arrived yet. We waited and waited…How long does it take to fry up a big breakfast and whack a couple of croissants on a plate?

Fortunately there was a street parade on while we were seated there which provided some diversion. All the local businesses went past, the primary school, the vintage car club, the school bus…The parade came and went, and still we waited for our food.

Then finally it arrived. 2 tiny, slightly burnt croissants with sachets of jam for me, and a cold ‘Bavarian Big Breakfast’. This included an uncooked tomato, overcooked eggs and unevenly cooked bacon.

They apologised several times for the wait but unfortunately the food itself was the biggest disappointment of all. We shan’t be going back!

Airlie Beach Village Café

November 9th 2007 12:03
We breakfasted here one morning and I’m sorry it wasn’t more. This café is right by the main street but is nestled back just enough to be calm and quiet. Most of the tables were on kind of boardwalk made shady by tropical plants and trees.

While visiting a friend that was staying at the plush Westin Hotel in Sydney recently, I stumbled across this hidden gem by the name of Mosaic which was located on the first floor of the hotel

Figs North Carlton

I found this café to be very average in many ways. It’s not particularly busy but not the most comfortable place to hang around. The interior lacks character and the tables and chairs are the sort of prostrate affair that serves its purpose with out the frills.

Bimbo's Pizza (Bimbo Deluxe)

October 8th 2007 02:02
Bimbo's is a bit of a Fitzroy institution. Trashy by name, trashy by nature.

Located on the Brunswick street strip, like the other bars it too has low red lighting, comfy couches and funky lamps. Bimbo's differentiates itself from the rest with its kooky decorations, mostly involving creepy plastic baby dolls, several of which are in bondage gear. They are so iconic they even feature on Bimbo's custom glasses

Bavarian Bier Cafe

September 21st 2007 03:07
We recently dined at the Bavarian Bier Café in the city in O’Connel Street. Physically it is quite impressive with wide sweeping ceilings and trendy décor. I hear that it used to be an old bank so you can imagine the kind of grandiose setting. Unfortunately the food was not quite so impressive.

Catch of the day was snapper, which was very nice, at least from what I could tell from the two small pieces of fish. This was also supposed to come with Caesar salad and garlic bread which I assume referred to the mayonnaise soaked lettuce and single slice of soggy bread. At $25 I was extremely disappointed. In fact so disappointed that we had to stop at a kebab shop on the way home to stop grumbling tummies. The prawn linguini looked a bit more filling though it tasted somewhat average

Wagamama

September 12th 2007 03:06
After having heard quite a bit about Wagamama, I decided to visit the franchise in the city near Circular Quay. It certainly looks quite impressive, occupying prime city real estate with a unified interior. Had it been more busy, though I may not have felt super comfortable with the seating arrangements, which were shared along long benches and tables.

Hot Chocolate is my new Cafe Latte

September 4th 2007 02:53
I love Chocolate. There aren’t many people in the world who don’t. Aside from the obvious health benefits of general happiness and sense of well being derived from the daily dosage of chocolate, a good hot chocolate cane enliven your senses and bring fire to your soul like no coffee can. Let me tell you, the Olmecs knew what they were doing back in 1500 BC, the oldest known civilisation to have first used cacao.

When I make it at home, I use chopped up good quality dark chocolate melted in hot full fat milk, with a touch of ground cinnamon and brown sugar. I like Green and Gold’s organic and fair-trade dark chocolate the best for this recipe

A few weekends ago I was taken along to yum cha at the Hung Cheung Chinese Restaurant in Marrickville. This was the first time I had been to yum cha in many years, and I had completely forgotten what it was like. The flurry of waiters moving throughout the crowded room, the din, the constant choices were all quite overwhelming. The fact that this restaurant becomes extremely popular and therefore extremely crowded, especially on the weekend, only added to the exciting atmosphere. The shear popularity and at least fifteen minute wait for a seat is testimony to the place’s good reputation, famed throughout Marrickville as the ‘best yum cha’ in town.

Grind in the City Cafe, Melbourne

Melbourne is famous for its hidden yet bustling laneway cafes. I’d been on the lookout for one such place to lunch when I was astonished to find a gorgeous lane absolutely jam packed with dozens of vibrant eateries.

Suede Bar Smith Street Melbourne

The air is infused with the welcoming smell of breakfast after 12, a must on a Saturday as far as I’m concerned. Suede is laced with brocade wall paper and lush soft couches perfect for sinking into with a cup of coffee. The coffee itslef smells great and looks fantastic.

The Happy Chef Newtown

June 21st 2007 07:27
A cheap and casual place to get a feed on King Street. Not the prettiest spot, but there’s plenty of room inside for large groups and some people swear by it. Having been there for several years now the Happy Chef has become part of the local landscape and has developed a solid clinetel of bustling diners on any night of the week.
