Go For 2 And 5

April 13th 2007 07:28
The ‘Go For Two And 5’ is a nation wide campaign to encourage people to include more fruit and vegetables in their diet. According to the website most Australians eat only half of the recommended intake, and this does not surprise me in the least! Adults require at least 2 serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day to maintain a health diet. This will help to prevent disease, fatigue and unhealthy weight gain.

Anyway, what actually first drew me to this concept are the excellent promotional advertisments which I have seen on TV and in print. They feature a ‘veggie man’. Its actually quite clever and I recommend that you check it out, even if only for his artistic merits! As the name suggests the mascot is made of vegetables which oddly contort when he speaks, a rather attention grabbing effect. You can view a storyboard of the advertisment on the website.

And if this does also encourage you to take more of an interest in healthy eating, there are plenty of resources and recipes on the site as well. The apple and banana hot cakes look yummy!

UNDERWATER RESTAURANT!!!

March 29th 2007 07:34
Picture the Hilton Maldive resort: an isolated island surrounded by an eternity of turquoise sea somewhere in the Indian Ocean. Private bungalows elevated over the sparking water. What could be more perfect?

Well such a place could only be improved if it had its very own underwater restaurant. A five star, super flash restaurant, submerged in the reef with glass walls through which to observe tropical fish, sharks and rays

Carved Vegetable Creatures

Look at these cuties! This takes the art of food carving to a whole new level! I love the comic effect of the kidney beans as eyes. This seems like something fun that you could try at home, it would certainly add a new dimension to veggies and might encourage the kids to eat more of them.

I came across this quote on Buzz - (discussing Thai takeaway shops) -
"Why aren't there any Thai shops called - 'Thai me kangaroo down' or 'Spare Thai-er' or 'Thai-phoon' or 'Thai-rant' or 'Thairanosaurus'??"

Oyster Shucking Picnic Fun

February 28th 2007 05:22
I arrived at work on Saturday feeling very down. I’d had a really bad day and I was all sulky. But when I was finished my boss cheered me right up, packing me into the car and taking me to Carriageworks, a brand new arts and performance space. Carriageworks earned its name from the building’s previous incarnation, a train repair station in Redfern.

Carriageworks had an industrial feel as the huge warehouse walls were still bare and rustic, and the steel rafters exposed. On Saturday the floor was covered in red tartan picnic blankets, each with two buckets on top. One was filled with oysters, salty water and lemon wedges, the other was for the shells. Thick, damp gloves and flat knives were also provided. If you weren’t too squeamish then you would put on the moist glove, crack open the oyster and suck out its raw juicy inards. Oh, and did I mention that there was also cold beer provided to wash it down

Murder Parties Not Always To Die For

February 19th 2007 10:16
Being a fun loving, food loving kind of girl the idea of a murder party always appealed to me. Actually, I though it sounded like the greatest thing ever! What could be more fun than decorating your house to a theme, getting your friends to dress up and then playing characters while a sordid tale of murder and mystery unfolds over an extravagant meal?

Well, this was what was running through my head at the time

Discovering Mango Seed Weavils

February 2nd 2007 11:44
After buying a box of mangoes (and happily eating half of them) we were shocked to find that some contained small creatures living inside them! They even crawled out of their little holes after we cut the mangoes up. My ever responsible mother captured the little buggies and quarantined them in a sealed plastic bag. She then emailed the Department of Primary Industries to find out if this was a threat to our ecosystem! This reply arrived a week later:

Cool huh?

Some Thoughts on Juice Bars....

January 30th 2007 10:46
* The juice bar below my old work had the lamest sounding supplements like ‘brain power supplement’ (what the hell is that? Caffine?)

* The trials and tribulations of working in a juice bar: ‘Slimmers- supplement’ contains citrine which is an appetite suppressant. One day when my sister was preparing someone’s drink, she was informed that they were no longer allowed to sell it, by order of the Health Department. (though it was never revealed why

Colourful Carrots

January 20th 2007 05:17
Who would have thought that carrots would inspire so much random trivia amongst people? Yes, that humble healthful snack, famously gnawed on by Bugs Bunny, adored by people the world over…Introducing- the Carrot!!!

With their slogan “discover the power of carrots”, the Carrot Museum are definitely ahead of the pack. They have a whole page of their website dedicated to ‘101 things you never knew about carrots’. I personally haven’t assessed this to make sure that there really are 101 things, nor whether I knew them or not, but it certainly still a very impressive and ambitious effort

Do you know what dragons eat?

January 8th 2007 11:38
According to the Powerhouse Museum’s resident dragonologist from Erth, Chinese water dragons are minerovours- meaning that they feed on minerals. These include antique Chinese vases and ground up pieces of the Great Wall of China.

Food Creatures

January 5th 2007 05:36
I was in an internet café in a village in Northern Thailand when I saw some of these amazing images. Each computer had a desktop image similar to those feature here. I think it very clever the way the artists have so effectively blended the aesthetic qualities of food with those of animals. These images were all produced by users on Worth 1000 as part of the regualr photoshop competitions held there.
