Pacific on a Plate, the Australian National Maritime Museum’s multi-cultural food festival, draws together the culinary traditions of people who have migrated to Australia from communities right around the vast Pacific basin.
There will a host of stalls offering dishes from as far as Japan, Canada and Peru, and a non-stop free entertainment program on Pacific themes.
The festival will be open to all, free, with no plate costing more than $10!
Dishes on offer will include Japanese takoyaki (dumplings with octopus, prawn or crabmeat); Ceviche from Peru (fish marinated in lemon, onion, garlic, coriander and Peruvian spices); Vietnam’s goi cuon (fresh rice paper rolls with prawns, pork, mint, basil and vermicelli); Russian deliashe (meat and onion pie); Canadian sugar pie (dessert pie with maple syrup filling); and a feast of other samples from China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, the Philippines, New Zealand and more…
The entertainment program, compered by prominent food journalist Joanna Savill, will feature cooking talks and demonstrations and music from around the Pacific including the celebrated TaikOz No Wa (Japanese-style taiko percussion troupe), The Real Mexico mariachi band and Polynesian dancing.
The Australian National Maritime Museum is open daily, 9.30 am to 5 pm. Pacific on a Plate will be open 11 am to 5 pm on 1-2 September. Inquiries (02) 9298 3777
