Oliver's Freeway Food

Oliver’s is probably one of the only places that is decent to eat at if you want to make a quick pit stop while trying get from A to B up or down Australia’s eastern coastline. Flanked by a McDonald’s and convenience store, there’s not a lot of competition. Personally I can’t abide the usual food you have settle for while road tripping so Oliver’s is a welcome relief.

Oliver’s is certainly no restaurant and has the look of any other fast food store inside, with a sterile, kid friendly set up. The service is mechanical with poor teenagers taking orders in matching uniforms. However the food is certainly much better than anything else you will find on the road. I had a chicken and string bean wrap with aioli, a small orange juice and a chop chip cookie. The wrap was surprisingly delicious, but the cookie sucked. I wasn’t even allowed to sit down and eat it as we had to hurry off on our way again.
Oliver’s is a response to the sudden wave of health consciousness that has led to a (slight) decrease in regular fast food sales. As people have become more interested in salads and such like, places like Oliver’s have cashed in by using the successful fast food formula combines with more wholesome fare.
The catch: The food is ridiculously expensive. At about $15.60 I could have eaten in a nice café for the same price. This was actually the price of a deal, which I decided to take since without the cookie it was only about 40c less. They take advantage of a captive market. While the food is quite decent, it’s definitely not worth the price. Pack a sandwich before you leave if you can.
