Native Fruits High in Antioxidants

August 3rd 2007 06:49
Recent CSIRO research suggests that several native fruits are very nutritious. We have heard many times about the benefits of antioxidants and how many fruits contain them, but apparently the levels found in these native fruits are particularly high.

These include:
Kakadu plums
Burdekin plums
Illawarra plums
Brush cherries
Molucca raspberries
Red and yellow finger limes
Tasmanian peppers

I wish this kind of food were more redily available. Not only would this expose us to new culinary delights, but it would also be much more beneficial for the Australian environment to cultivate plants that were suited to the land. Hopefully the market for native produce will continue to grow with discoveries such as these.
