Latteria Cafe Darlinghurst

Latteria is a strange little place that had no real divisions between inside outside, kitchen or dining areas. The café seemed to have previously been a store room or something as it was really nothing more than a narrow space between two shops. Along the side of the space the waitresses and cook shuffled to prepare and serve the food using the appliances that lined the sides. Necessarily due to space restrictions most of the seating was on the footpath, but I don’t know what they would do in the event of rain.

The seating might seem charming and rustic at some other time. But after sitting for two hours on the uncomfortable seating in the Stables theatre it is rather hard on the buttocks. Also, the milk crate-cum-tables could be seen as some sort of ironic use of something but actually they’re rather small, unsteady and cause one to stoop over to reach your food and drink. Also please note the poorly designed sugar dispenser, which creates a danger of accidently pouring a ton of sugar into your coffee every time. Perhaps these touches were actually an expression of extreme inner city sheike.
On the other hand, perhaps it wasn’t that trendy after all because they had to politely knock back our requests for a hazelnut latte and vanilla soy latte as they weren’t on the menu. Also the service was friendly and attentive, unlike trendier restaurants where rude indifference is a pre requisite.
There was also a lovely sight on the other side of the road. Several sulphur crested cockatoos perched in a tree and on a sign. A great thing to see while dining in one Sydney’s most densely populated areas.
