Koko Black Chocolate in Melbourne
June 12th 2007 04:38
When inquiring as to a good place to buy chocolate for my mother I was given the following directions; “Travel down Bourke Street until you come to an arcade adjacent that is remincent of the QVB. Its on the left opposite a Babushka doll store.”
Imagine my surprise when I actually found Koko Black so easily!
Hidden in what is surely one of Bourke Street’s most attractive arcades, Koko Black is nestled away amongst Art Deco architecture, high arched ceilings and gorgeous stained glass reliefs.

The staff were warm and polite, and the atmosphere was one of quiet contentment. The upstairs dining area is quite small, and I was tipped off that the window side seats make an intimate date setting. If that’s not your style there is a selection of delectable chocolates available down stairs to take home for yourself or a loved one. They are certainly at gourmet chocolate prices, but quality is worth it. In addition, the ‘dine in’ prices are really very reasonable.
I would have loved to try the sampler which looked sublime, but unfortunately they were soon to close and I instead opted for the Belgium hot chocolate. Perfect for a chilly winter afternoon. You know how you know its really good hot chocolate? Sometimes, you get to the bottom and there’s a bitter silt-like substance there. But at Koko Black the residue at the bottom of the cup is lumps of pure, delicious chocolate.
Other Koko Black branches are to be found in Melbourne and also one in Canberra. They also hold chocolate events across the various salons, such as demonstrations in chocolate making.
