Journeys Café Katoomba

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Katoomba and part of the appeal is the fresh air, beautiful local scenery and of course the selection of lovely shops along Katoomba street.
Last weekend on my annual expedition to the Winter Magic Festival we had breakfast along the main street, as is customary. Upon arrival at 11:30 in the morning we viewed the traditional Winter Magic parade and developed a mammoth hunger. We went into Journeys and sat in the comfy booth, relieved by the warmth inside. There was a great atmosphere as everyone was buzzing and colourfully dressed, taking in the aroma of fresh coffee.

We first had breakfasted at Journeys two year earlier, escorted there by a local girl. That was a perfect day, so I remembered the place fondly. I had a sticky date pudding and the three boys all had big breakfasts which were ten dollars at the time. It seems that inflation has set in but they are still definitely good value. For $12.50 you get a plate heaped with eggs, toast, sausages, bacon, mushrooms and well cooked tomatoes. We also had a bowl of wedges which were very tasty. The best thing about them was the satisfactory wedge to sour cream ratio. It really annoys me when you order wedges and they come with a tiny container of sour cream which is never going to last you the whole bowl of wedges.
Journeys also does a mean Italian coffee which is hot coffee in a delicate glass, mixed with Frangelico and topped with whipped cream. A very decadent drink to have with breakfast. While you wait for your meal you can read the cheerfully optimistic, yet badly punctuated passage stencilled onto the wall. Another appealing feature of this little place is the regular live music that is set up in the corner and showcases talent that adds to the relaxed atmosphere.
If you venture upstairs you will also be delighted to discover a room full lof artworks by local artists. At the time of my visit several different works were on display, including some vivid landscape photographs, mixed media abstracts and fine sketches. There was also a kids corner with a little sculpture play area including scenery, props and toys that children could play with to create their own ‘story’.
Journeys is a lovely café with a great atmosphere and I recommend it along with all the other fine establishments along Katoomba Street as a great place to get a warm meal to stave off the mountain chills.
On another note, unrelated to food, I would just like to also strongly recommend the ‘Number 14 Guesthouse’ as an excellent accommodation option.

The service is great, extremely helpful and accommodating (pardon the pun), and the rooms are cosy and nice. There is a clean shared kitchen and bathroom for general use, a small common room with couches, books and board games, and a dining table in a room with a roaring fireplace. And it’s very warm, which you will soon realise is extremely important. The rates are very reasonable, even less than the YHA in some instances. The only potential down side is it’s described as a place for the ‘quiet traveller’ so it’s not really the place for a big group of friends or party. Absolutely perfect for a romantic weekend away though. I wanted to keep Number 14 a secret for my own private use, but it’s so good I just felt the need to share it with all you lovely people.
