Hung Cheung Chinese Restaurant Marrickville

A few weekends ago I was taken along to yum cha at the Hung Cheung Chinese Restaurant in Marrickville. This was the first time I had been to yum cha in many years, and I had completely forgotten what it was like. The flurry of waiters moving throughout the crowded room, the din, the constant choices were all quite overwhelming. The fact that this restaurant becomes extremely popular and therefore extremely crowded, especially on the weekend, only added to the exciting atmosphere. The shear popularity and at least fifteen minute wait for a seat is testimony to the place’s good reputation, famed throughout Marrickville as the ‘best yum cha’ in town.

The food was both strange and tasty, most dishes being unidentifiable steamed things with surprise fillings, as the waiters’ English didn’t extend much further than the dish name and ‘yes’ or ‘no’. This in itself was exciting and I made many tasty discoveries. There was also some very good seafood, and the custard tarts for desert were also a favourite.
I once heard someone say that it is a primal instincts that attract us to food that is moving, hence the popularity of things like sushi train and yum cha. I doubt that there is any truth to this theory but it is interesting nonetheless. And there is something about the pressure of constantly being offered food that does encourage me to eat more than I ordinarily would. Though we seemed to order food in droves, in the end the prices were indeed reasonable and happily split between the group. And needless to say we all had very full bellies.
