Hook Island Food Diary
November 20th 2007 09:14
Day one:
We arrive on the beautiful Hook island. The resort is small and secluded on a pretty beach and surrounded by bush. To my delight there is amazing snorkelling right at the doorstep.
There is only one place to eat on the island, and that is the resort’s café. You are not allowed to bring your own food, though I snuck in some olives, dip and muesli bars
thankfully.
We look at the lunch menu which is:
- Fish and chips
- Veggie Burger and chips
- Chicken Burger and chips
- Beef Burger and chips
- Seafood platter and chips
- Pasta of the day
The veggie burger and pasta was unavailable. We each ordered the fish and chips, figuring that this would be pretty safe. Battered fish and a huge pile of chips, didn’t go wrong.
The set meal times span a couple of hours each, and I’m a bit of a grazer so I look at the selection of snacks for in between. You can have chips or chocolate bars.
“Can I buy fruit for snacks?” I enquire.
“Do you want an apple or an orange? We keep them in the fridge so they last ages.” He replies.
The staff are generally hanging around drinking or watching TV and seem pretty put out whenever I want something. It makes me feel uncomfortable.
The dinner menu consisted of:
- Steak and chips
- Grilled fish and chips
- Seafood basket and chips
- Chicken curry.
Chicken curry and the grilled fish are unavailable. I ordered the steak, Stu had the seafood basket. It was very battered, we couldn't identify what kind of seafood was inside. My steak was ok, and I requested that it come with veggies instead of chips.
Day 2:
The breakfast menu is:
- Continental breakfast
- Pancakes
- Hook Island Big Breakfast
The big breakfast comes and is ok. Mine is self serve cereal and two slices of white bread with jam.
Chips and white bread. Not only am I going to get fat, but I’ll be constipated too.
We then wait for lunch and I foolishly order a chicken burger. I should never have stepped outside the barrier of safety. The ‘chicken’ is crumbed grey meat which I remove and eat the bread only.
By the way, none of these meals are included. Each one is about $12 tabbed to our final bill.
We are discussing dinner and decide that steak is the only safe option. We go over to the counter and wait until one of the staff can be bothered to get up from watching TV to serve us.
“Pizza night tonight. We made a pizza for youse.” She says.
I don’t even know what’s on the pizza.
“Er, we were kind of hoping for steak and veggies tonight.”
The dumb presumptuous bitch just stares at us. One of the other staff pipes up;
“I’ll cook you a steak”
Then the girl sourly interjects, “But we haven’t got any veggies ready.”
“Forget it” and we storm off.
I mean, it was very gracious of them to make us a pizza and all, but come on. I feel like we are unwanted guests here.
We are going to bed hungry. This only happens in third world countries! This is not supposed to happen in a ‘resort’ where we are paying $150 a night!
We will have to leave tomorrow, as soon as possible. We asked when the boat will come here next, they don’t even know. Said they will find out tomorrow.
If you don’t hear from me again, please come looking on Hook island. I reckon we can live off the feral goats, coconuts and fish here for a few more days.
Please send help!
NB: This story has a happy ending. When we were checking out early our food tab was far less than we expected- the staff had been too lazy to fill in most of the entries.

I had a similar experience on daydream island..it wasn't as bad as yours as there was a greater variety of food but none of it was what I would call high quality...or even "grocery store fresh" I didn't expect the organic markets!
It's just sad when you go somewhere beautiful and you end up feeling uncomfortable for it...as you said, a relaxing island holiday just "ain't right" when constipation awaits!!!!

This place looks divine, but how greedy is it that you can't bring your own food in so that you have to buy theirs?
I'm glad it had a happy ending though, that you enjoyed yourself.
