Heavy Metal Cooking Show Turns Biker
April 27th 2006 07:28
Today I was sitting a bar/café on Broadway and overheard a man talking about a ‘Heavy Metal Cooking Show’. He was very tall and big with a black crew cut and pointy sideburns and he was wearing sunglasses with yellow lenses. He also had lots of spiky metal jewellery and had two full sleeves of colourful tattoos. He obviously knew what he was talking about.
Then, because I’m a freak, I went over and asked him all about it. I felt it was my responsibility as a serious food journalist. He spoke with an American accent and it turns out that the program was going to be produced in California with him as the host.
This was the premise behind the show: It would have been set in a bar type scenario, with people playing pool, lounging around having beers etc. Oh, and also with girls in roller skates serving the beer apparently (OHS issues?). Metal and rock bands would play on stage and also cook some of their favourite dishes in a section set up like a kitchen. Some segments would switch back to pre-recorded footage of the band members cooking specialties in their own homes.
Unfortunately three months into filming the pilot the money dried up and before they could source extra funding their idea was stolen! Yes, a ‘Biker Cooking Show’ was already underway and aired soon afterwards.
Some quick googling revealed that there is now not just one biker rip off cooking show- but two! It seems that blending a tough guy attitude and a Harley with cooking is not as unusual as you might think!
Biker Billy – Cooks with fire!
This show does not feature bands but rather follows the adventures of the host, Biker Billy. He generally shows off bikes and then does some cooking. I like it because he only cooks tough food, like stuff with lots of chill in it. He also gives all his recipes tough names, like ‘Lucifer’s Lasagna’. In addition, he’s a man of the people and can be found ‘keeping it real’ at bike conventions across the USA.
The Biker Chef
Christopher Coppola also claims to be ‘the’ biker chef. This program is a bit more cultural. The bikers travel to different areas of America and showcase the local produce and specialties of each area, adding their own unique touch. Though more interesting and refined, Coppola definitely looses points on toughness. Let’s face it, anyone promoting themselves as, “intent on using the power of cooking to bring people together” is a little bit soft.
