Lara MGyu-tan (Beef tongue)

The thought of eating a cow's tongue may not appeal to the average Australian, but we should definitely think twice before declining some succulent gyu-tan. Gyu-tan (Gyu is Cow; Tan is Tongue in Japanese) has a slightly chewy yet tender texture and the taste is just simply, incredible.
I had the pleasure of trying some gyu-tan at Kings Cross eatery Ju-Ju a few weeks back and it was absolutely divine. It was slightly chewier than I had expected but it was cooked to perfection and tasted great - I can assure you there is no weird taste or smell associated with a cow's tongue.
As far as I could tell, the gyu-tan was very lightly marinated with little more than a bit of salt (and freshly squeezed lemon juice added according to taste) to ensure that its natural flavours were retained.
Cow tongue is a great barbecue addition complemented by a number of other dishes or simply enjoyed as a tasty treat on its own and I strongly recommend you try some next time you are at a Japanese (yakiniku-style) restaurant.
