Going Bananas Over Cyclone Larry

May 2nd 2006 11:42
Here in Australia we have been suffering an acute banana shortage. The recent cyclone Larry (I wonder why they always give them such boring names? I would have called it 'Destructo' or 'Cyclatron' ) which struck the warmer regions of the Australian coastline has destroyed a significant proportion of the country’s annual banana crop. Larry wrought devastation in Northern Queensland where 80-95% of our bananas are grown. Demand caused banana prices to sky rocket as high as $6 a kilo in some places. The Australian Banana Growers Council have established a special hotline for people facing hardship in the wake of the destruction.

Cyclone Larry Hits North Queensland

Though deep sympathy and aid should be reserved for those growers directly affected by the loss, the impacts indirectly reach everyone. Bananas are a fantastic source of nutrients and are a tasty and convinient snack.

1. Bananas contain natural fibre, which we all know is essential for healthy bowels. It also contributes as protection from ulcers and should help to reduce water tension.

2. Bananas are one of the best natural sources of potassium. Therefore, eating bananas can significantly lower the risk of high blood pressure and related diseases like heart attack and strokes.

3. The natural sugars (sucrose, fructose and glucose) and carbohydrates in bananas can give you a healthy, sustained energy boost that won’t leave you soon feeling depleted like manufactured sugars often do.

4. Bananas also contain vitamin A, B, C, E and K. They are also a supply of protein, iron and phosphorus

According to Essortment, the average person eats around 27 pounds of bananas per year.
So where can Aussies get a regular banana hit without breaking the budget? Rumour has it they are going cheap at Aldi.

TIP: My sister suggested that you could also get a banana fix by buying a banana smoothie from one of the many juice bars that have established themselves everywhere now. They will still have to sell it to you at the regular rate though they will be wholesaling the bananas at heavily inflated prices.
