German Super Heroes' Gourmet Mission

May 12th 2006 06:41
In Germany a group of villains dressed as super heroes has been stirring the public and authorities by performing humourous robberies. The group specialises in robing gourmet grocery stores and pinching the most expensive, exclusive foodstuffs they can find. This food is then, Robin Hood style, distributed among the city’s poorer citizens. Police believe the group is formed of a loose collective known as ‘Hamburg in Vain’.

This was reported by the Scotsman Newspaper and cross posted on Boing Boing. Notably, I could only find two online articles about this event, while most others are simply duplicates of the Scotsman article.

While I do believe that stealing is wrong, I can definitely understand the group’s political motivation. It is not uncommon to associate the bourgeois’s wealth status with the food that they consume. A common metaphoric image employed to describe the decadent upper class is that of plump pig. They are seen as the epitome of over-consumption, of which food is only one example.

Kobe beef is always top of the thieves shopping list as it retails at about $250AU pound. Kobe beef is famous for its tender, marbled texture. I know a girl who tried it once and she said it was the most delicious piece of meat she had ever tasted. This incredible beef comes from the Wagyu cow which leads a remarkable, though somewhat short, life. During its days in Japan the cattle is hand massaged with sake and given beer to drink with their friends. Ah, those crazy Japanese, what will they do next? We make it in Australia too, though I doubt the process is so extensive.
Delicious Kobe beef

Anarchists are generally known to be a bit on the angsty side, but these guys clearly have a sense of humour and a hatred of violence. In one robbery the startled shop attendant was presented with a bunch of flowers. I am impressed by their cool attitude and style, and also with the fact that they have managed to pull this off. The police are still baffled as to who the mischievous culprits are.

Shani!

I have only just figured out where your blog is! Apologies, you have now been safely added to my RSS list for regular checks =)

So greetings my fellow hedonist.

Hm... super heroes that DON'T work for Commissioner Gordon? Notice too that the renegade super heroes also don't look NEARLY as good in tights =P (it pays to work for The Man)

Then again... Robin Hood...

I've just confused myself. Great story anyway =)

Is Kobe beef really that good?

Sure, it sounds delicious 'beer fed, hand massaged'...

Actually, in Canada, a lot of cows are fed beer... the leftover beer from the big Canadian breweries are sold to the cattle farmers. It's high in calories!
