Special Mardi Gras Treat

March 1st 2007 10:03
The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade is just around the corner. This highlight event draws an international crowd that has every hotel in Sydney booked out at least a week in advance (Believe me, I’ve tried to get one). This colourful, glamorous spectacle is also broadcast on national television and streamed over the internet.

For the Mardi Gras season, fancy Darlinghurst restaurant Forbes and Burton is offering a free special dessert to their diners. Shortened to ‘FAB’ the name couldn’t be a more appropriate way to describe the camp pink strawberry parfait with berries and rosewater. Yummy!

This offer will be available until Saturday the 24th of March and interested parties should mention the complimentary offer when booking. FAB is located at 252 Forbes St Darlinghurst and can be contacted on 9356 8788.

The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival

February 21st 2007 08:30
The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival launches into its fifteenth year this March. A celebration of Melbourne’s rich culinary culture, the fortnight long festival features classes, displays, competitions and forums. There will also be plenty of focus on world famous Victorian wine.

Their motto is a fabulous quote made by the eternal Oscar Wilde, “The only way to overcome temptation is to yield to it

Olive Leaf Juice Craze Ends In Murder

February 12th 2007 10:47
I found this really odd article on olive leaves on the Australian (newspaper) website today. It begins by stating the recent notice of potential health benefits. A short segment on Greek TV apparently suggested that drinking juice made from the leaves could lower cholesterol and had been shown to reduce cancer in experiments with lab mice. And this apparently then caused a lot of opportunists to start selling olive leaf juice as a miracle cure. All very well and good. Then this brief yet enigmatic statement; “the craze has led to one death.” What the? There is no elaboration and this is merely a passing reference.

Solid Link Between BMI and Fast Food

January 19th 2007 05:04
A recent study conducted by the University of North Carolina recently suggested that there is a link between an increase in BMI (Body Mass Index) and the consumption of fast food. No! Surely not? This controversial study is set to rock the country as fast food outlets can be blamed for morbid obesity and spreading diabetes.

Dine at the Famous Speigeltent

January 12th 2007 05:47
As part of the Sydney Festival the Famous Speigeltent has hit the streets of Sydney! The tent was intricately crafted in Belgium in the 20s and has since housed a variety of performers over a range of eras. Meaning ‘tent of mirrors’, the mirror lined walls of the Speigeltent have reflected events both sordid and spectacular. For the duration of the Festival the Famous Speigeltent can be found in the Northern half of Hyde Park.

Clones are yummy, they say

January 6th 2007 06:12
The Food and Drug Administration, a US national body has recently released a report stating that their research shows products from cloned animals are fit for human consumption. They stated that they found no adverse health implications resulted from the consumption of meat and animal products from cloned animals.

Do we really trust any research done by the US government

Healthy Kids Cook At Home

December 28th 2006 12:13
Young people who prepare more meals at home themselves are meeting higher standards of dietary requirements when compared with those who don’t, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The article contains a lot of detailed information on the eating habits of young people, but is inconclusive in terms of the social reasons for such trends.

Not only in America

This is a short follow up to my recent post on the changing terminology from ‘hunger’ to ‘low food security’ which was revealed in a recent US report.

Spinach Can Reduce Skin Cancer Risk

December 9th 2006 06:11
So Popeye was really on to something! Not only does spinach contain lots of iron for Popeye style muscle building super strength, it also contains a wealth of nutrients which can halve the chance of a relapse amongst skin cancer patients, recent research suggests.

"Green leafy vegetables are good sources of folic acid, vitamins A, C and E, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, and other components which may help boost the skin's natural defence against damage caused by UV rays," Dr van der Pols said

Low Food Security

November 28th 2006 02:20
Political correctness is something that annoys a lot of people. We’re now supposed to dwarves ‘little people’ and call fairy penguins ‘little penguins’ in case homosexuals get offended. But having vaguely studied semiotics I can understand why this is an issue. It is an attempt to remove damaging connotations from words in order to create new, less offensive meanings. For example ‘little people’ does not have the same bearded, axe wielding connotations. Similarly people can reclaim words by using them in new contexts, such as the words ‘fag’ and ‘wog’ have been adopted by those they were previously used derogatorily against, thus removing some social prejudice from the words.

KFC Targets Extraterrestrials

November 23rd 2006 06:34
This image was found in an article in the Sydney Morning Herald. Were it in some more dubious source, I would find this very hard to believe. Though I guess it should technically be possible to check its validity on Google Earth.

Some of Sydney’s most prominent food writers (myself excluded, ahem) will be appearing at the Newtown Festival tomorrow on Sunday the 12th of November. The festival is usually a fantastic day out with a multitude of stalls, free entertainment and a range of food and beverages that will keep you amused until the whole thing shuts down at 6pm. This year features the introduction of the controversial fence, symbolising an ‘of-fence’ against punters who are not used to being subjected to a line and frisk before entering the park.

Nevertheless if you do decide to sacrifice your BYO and pay the exorbitant prices for alcohol on the premises then you should visit the 'Better Read Than Dead' writer’s tent at 2pm

Sydney Food and Wine Fair - Hyde Park

October 24th 2006 11:58
As part of the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Month there will be a food festival in Hyde park this Saturday. At the Sydney Food and Wine Fair there will be over one hundred food stalls from Sydney’s top restaurants, cafes, vineyards and breweries. With free entry, jazz and entertainment it looks like a great way to spend your Saturday afternoon. However there are a couple of strange features. The first is their ticketing system by which you need to purchase vouchers which you can then trade in for food. This seems like a bit of a convoluted process but perhaps there’s some sort of strategic reason behind it. Secondly, according to the website there is only a two hour window of opportunity between 12 and 2pm during which you can purchase food but the music then continues until 5pm. Nevertheless the funds go to the AIDS Trust of Australia so it’s definitely a worthy cause.
