Pacific on a Plate, the Australian National Maritime Museum’s multi-cultural food festival, draws together the culinary traditions of people who have migrated to Australia from communities right around the vast Pacific basin.

Native Fruits High in Antioxidants

August 3rd 2007 06:49
Recent CSIRO research suggests that several native fruits are very nutritious. We have heard many times about the benefits of antioxidants and how many fruits contain them, but apparently the levels found in these native fruits are particularly high.

These include

Fat Tax

July 17th 2007 07:23
Suggestions have been made by researchers at Oxford University for what has been deemed a ‘fat tax’.

This has fallen upon criticism for two reasons. Firstly that the government isn’t responsible for acting as ‘nanny’ for its citizens in all matters, as free choice reigns. The second and more important problem is that this tax will probably hit low income earning families the hardest, as they tend to be the biggest consumers of unhealthy food in the first place. If they continue their eating habits the already considerably high cost of food will rise, and if they switch to healthier alternatives their costs will probably rise too. I was absolutely horrified at the cost of fruit and vegetables this week, having spent $7 for four apples and with bananas back up at $7.80 a kilo. And also, not surprisingly, has been strongly objected to by private enterprise

I read an interesting article in the Sydney Morning Herald relating to the diet of Japanese Astronauts. I’m sure as a kid everyone has tried ‘space food’. I remember being extremely disappointed with a ‘space bar’, a kind of snack that looks like a kit kat, smells like chocolate but tastes and feels like rubber in your mouth.

However, in space astronauts are not usually so fortunately and have to mostly subsist on military style rations. However, these Japanese astronauts are periodically given ‘bonus packs’ as a special treat to boost morale during long periods of time in space. This is simlar to the half way parties held by American naval submarines when the journey reaches its half way point

The Bogan Burger

June 24th 2007 10:50
Finally, the ultimate burger has been created.

Today Tonight reports that a budding Melbourne entrepreneur has invented the ‘Bogan Burger’ soon to be an Australian classic dish. Now while I’m not usually inclined to believe a single pathetic excuse for a news story that is on his program, it is suited to gimmicky infotainment such as this

The Inner West Courier recently reported that issues of food safety are being acted upon in Sydney. The Su-Shi World factory in Camperdown has been closed indefinitely due to a major rat infestation that was not addressed.

The case is significant because it one example of the NSW authorities’ new ‘name and shame’ policy in which prosecuted parties are publicly reported on. While this will certainly be a major deterrent for offenders, could it also prevent them from ever successfully recovering their business after a fine

A recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald suggests that hygiene in Sydney’s restaurants is of a generally low standard. This is attributed to a lack of knowledge on the part of workers and a lack of policing on the part of authorities.

“And yet contaminated food, whether it be from the home, restaurants or takeaways, puts about 18,000 people in hospital and causes about 120 deaths each year, according to the federal Department of Health

Organic food has previously been dismissed as a potential solution to world hunger as it is seen to be an expensive developed world niche commodity. However, according to recent research conducted by scientists from Denmark and Michigan, this may not in fact be the case.

The cost incurred by loss of crops to pests and disease was found to be offset by the cost of expensive pesticides and growth hormones, as well as the reduced damage to arable land. Furthermore surplus could be sold off at a higher rate due to the demand and prices fetched by organic food

Well here’s some good news. Or at least, here’s some sketchy research that may to some extent justify your copious drinking and spending habits.

If you’re a swanky cocktail drinker, you’ll be pleased to know that US and Thai researchers have recently decided that fruity cocktails may be high in healthful anti-oxidants. These findings were published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture
