Bankstown Bites Food Festival

July 16th 2007 07:15
Bankstown Bites is coming! This is not a literal reference to the locals I hope.

Bankstown Bites
Saturday the 21st July
10am-4pm
Chapel Road & Bankstown City Plaza

Demonstrations will be held featuring celebrity chef Huey, famous for his long running TV series and weight loss associated with Jenny Craig. He is running sessions at 11.30am and 1.30pm and will be hosting a book signing at 12.30pm.

There will also be ethnic themed walking tours of the area, a great idea to explore many of the authentic nooks and crannies otherwise overlooked in the maze of Bankstown streets.

There will even be a children’s area with magic, face painting and a classic Punch and Judy show, something I haven’t seen for years.

I read an interesting article in the Sydney Morning Herald relating to the diet of Japanese Astronauts. I’m sure as a kid everyone has tried ‘space food’. I remember being extremely disappointed with a ‘space bar’, a kind of snack that looks like a kit kat, smells like chocolate but tastes and feels like rubber in your mouth.

However, in space astronauts are not usually so fortunately and have to mostly subsist on military style rations. However, these Japanese astronauts are periodically given ‘bonus packs’ as a special treat to boost morale during long periods of time in space. This is simlar to the half way parties held by American naval submarines when the journey reaches its half way point

The Bogan Burger

June 24th 2007 10:50
Finally, the ultimate burger has been created.

Today Tonight reports that a budding Melbourne entrepreneur has invented the ‘Bogan Burger’ soon to be an Australian classic dish. Now while I’m not usually inclined to believe a single pathetic excuse for a news story that is on his program, it is suited to gimmicky infotainment such as this

The Inner West Courier recently reported that issues of food safety are being acted upon in Sydney. The Su-Shi World factory in Camperdown has been closed indefinitely due to a major rat infestation that was not addressed.

The case is significant because it one example of the NSW authorities’ new ‘name and shame’ policy in which prosecuted parties are publicly reported on. While this will certainly be a major deterrent for offenders, could it also prevent them from ever successfully recovering their business after a fine

A recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald suggests that hygiene in Sydney’s restaurants is of a generally low standard. This is attributed to a lack of knowledge on the part of workers and a lack of policing on the part of authorities.

“And yet contaminated food, whether it be from the home, restaurants or takeaways, puts about 18,000 people in hospital and causes about 120 deaths each year, according to the federal Department of Health

Organic food has previously been dismissed as a potential solution to world hunger as it is seen to be an expensive developed world niche commodity. However, according to recent research conducted by scientists from Denmark and Michigan, this may not in fact be the case.

The cost incurred by loss of crops to pests and disease was found to be offset by the cost of expensive pesticides and growth hormones, as well as the reduced damage to arable land. Furthermore surplus could be sold off at a higher rate due to the demand and prices fetched by organic food

Well here’s some good news. Or at least, here’s some sketchy research that may to some extent justify your copious drinking and spending habits.

If you’re a swanky cocktail drinker, you’ll be pleased to know that US and Thai researchers have recently decided that fruity cocktails may be high in healthful anti-oxidants. These findings were published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture

Quite a lot of controversy surrounds the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (Run by the government) move towards implementing compulsory folic acid increase in Australian made bread. The Food Standards Australia New Zealand suggests that this addition would greatly reduce the incidence of spina bifida in children as folic acid consumed by pregnant women can prevent this disease.

However, the bread industry immediately recoiled at this suggestion, stating that it was not responsibility of the industry but rather that of the consumer. Here we see, yet again, the age old argument. The large and powerful cooperation does not want to overextend towards the community, while consumers are supposed to take into account a wealth of nutritional knowledge, up to date research and comparative analysis when shopping

UTS (University of Technology, Sydney) and the Sydney Morning Herald conducted an interesting study on the connection between food produce and global warming. They did calculations based on the groceries of two of Australia’s major supermarket chains and the estimated grocery consumption of the average Australian. The conclusion was that an average shopping basket was brought to you by 156 Kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions, without counting the refrigeration used during transit, or any energy used during its farming, processing or packaging. I.e. this mostly concerns the food’s transportation, which is far costlier in terms of emissions when flown rather than shipped.

To put this 156 Kilograms of carbon emissions in perspective, the Sydney Morning Herald states that “The average home's energy use generates about 22 kilograms of greenhouse gases each day

Junk Ads Banned in UK

March 12th 2007 10:33
I never thought it would happen but they’ve finally done it! Junk food advertisements have been banned in the UK!

I have mentioned this in several other posts, always believing that the multinationals were far too powerful for consumer groups’ efforts to take any effect. Nevertheless, last week the UK media authority announced the decision to ban advertisements for foods high in fat, salt and sugar from children’s broadcasting
