Capsicum - Pepper

November 26th 2007 09:00
Capsicum Peppers

Capsicum, also called bell pepper, chili/chilli pepper, red or green pepper, or just pepper is a vegetable that has been used for decades as a catalyst for other herbs.

Originally found in tropical America, they are now cultivated world-wide and are readily available in C. annuum and C. frutescens species in markets and supermarkets.

Capsicum

C. annuum, which includes the "bell pepper" (American name) variety, is sold in both its immature green state and its red, yellow or orange ripe state. Most commonly used in its red state, its colour is partly due to its high vitamin A content.

Today, capsicums are also available in purple and yellow on top of the existing green, red and orange varieties.

Yellow Capsicum

Capsicums can be eaten raw (chopped in salads), or cooked (stir-fries), roasted and stuffed with fillings such as cheese, meat or rice. They can also be finely chopped and incorporated into many sauces and salsa.

As well as eaten fresh, capsicums can also be preserved via drying, freezing or pickling. Dried peppers are usually processed into flakes or powder, but can also be used as a whole.

Norwegian Sex Shops Does Wrong

November 22nd 2007 06:27
A Norwegian sex store chain was recently sprung with a surprise inspection by the government authority for food safety. In Norway, like Australia, vendors are obliged to display labels on all food products describing all ingredients.

During the raid it was found that several products carried by the notorious chain did not comply with these regulations. Edible handcuff, underwear and ‘penis pasta’ were not labelled correctly. The chain has pleaded ignorance and promises to rectify the mistake

Microbes Desire Chocolate

October 14th 2007 05:32
A bizarre study performed in Switzerland suggests a link to stomach bacteria and chocolate. Only a small study, the sample sourced included 11 men who ate chocolate and 11 who did not. The 11 non-chocolate eating men sources for the study were described as ‘weird’.

Research was performed at the Nestle Research Centre. Ummmm…hang on. I think we all recognise that name as one of the major chocolate manufacturers and distributors in the world? Even the name itself sounds like some kind of fictional institution like other mythical establishments created for marketing purposes

The cost of food continues to rise

October 4th 2007 04:35
It has already become apparent to most that the cost of food in Australia has been slowly creeping upwards and it is said that it will continue to rise steeply. The drought is the primary reason for this hike, and in particular the grain industry of Eastern Australia has been affected.

Woolworths heavyweight Michael Luscombe says that we have not yet reached the full impact of the drought and can expect further price increases as suppliers have been presuring retails distributers such as Woolworths to increase prices and modify contracts in response to environmental factors

Important News on Climate Change

September 27th 2007 10:15
The Australian government has spent our tax dolars creating an ad campaign of spin to dupe the Australian publilc in to thinking that it cares about climate change. After years of showing no commitment to any environmental policies we will not be fooled. Howard's idea of greener energy sources is nuclear power!

Get Up are an amazzing organisation that campaigns community causes. When the Australian Government launches their ad campaign during the AFL grand final, Get Up want to air their own ad on climate change

Food Labelling To Be Reviewed

September 26th 2007 12:02
It has been suggested that Australian food labelling should include simple to read colour coding to aid consumers to make the right choices. In light of a trial currently being undertaken in Britain, Australian groups are now pushing for a similar system to be introduced.

Many producers supply the mandatory information on their food labels but this can be quite difficult to interpret for the average shopper who does not have a good knowledge of nutrition or mathematics. The proposed labelling system will mimic a ‘traffic light’ system where green means safe, red means consumption should be limited and orange is moderate. It is also possible labels will be further standardised and have to appear on the front of packaging

Feastibility!

September 13th 2007 07:42
As usual, its to be held at the Newtown Performing School of Arts (350 King Street, Newtown)

It is one of the many initiatives of Marrickville council. It has been running for several years annually now so it must have something going for it. There are over 40 stalls which showcase the food from local vendors but I found it to be rather overcrowded and over-expensive last year. They also have some entertainment, though again, last year this did not seem very interesting

Pregnant Mothers Junk

August 22nd 2007 07:33
A strange new study suggests that over eating and junk food addiction could have foetal origins. The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition involved feeding pregnant rats different diets and monitoring the effect this had on the children’s eating habits. Unexpectedly, the young rats whose mothers had been fed junk food had a greater tendency towards it and over eating in general.

I had always assumed that traits such as these were passed on through environmental habit in a child’s formative years, but this frightening research suggests that a child’s eating habits may be influenced even earlier, in the womb

The 10th London Vegan Food Fair

August 19th 2007 07:25
My friend immigrated to London on Tuesday, and she’s already planning her social calendar for the weekend! On the list is the London Vegan Fair, bound to be a host of unusual flavours and innovative vegan cuisine.

Held in the Kensington Town Hall (Hornton Street) this event is happening this Sunday the 19th of August, rain or shine. And with the entrance fee a mere 1 Pound it’s a very affordable Sunday out. Under sixteens are admitted free so it would also be a good outing for families. And if you like to sleep in on a Sunday as much as I do, never fear for the fair is on from 10am to 8pm
