Tax Day Giveaways

April 15th 2011 12:30
I always thought that there were only two guarantees in life; death and taxes. It turns out that a third guarantee has developed, tax day giveaways. Eateries around the world have offered treats and freebies as compensation for the hassle we all know as tax season. It also gets people spending money in their establishments, but I'm sure sympathy is their main reason for the offers.

This year is no different as several recognizable chains are offering discounts on their treats.

IHOP was not satisfied with merely one day; they decided to plan a promotion for the entire month of April. Children under the age of 12 can eat free this month between 4-10 PM when their parents order an adult entrée.

White Castle has a coupon offer good for 15% off at participating locations. The burger palace's deal runs through April 19th.

Arbys is having its free FryDay April 15th. You have to 'like' their Facebook page to receive the coupon, which you must then print off and bring into the chain. It sounds like a lot of work but their curly fries are no joke.

MaggieMoo's Ice Cream and Treatery is offering a free mini sundae when you come in April 18th from 3-6 PM.

If this will not quite fill your dessert desire, you can head over to Cinnabon after your stop at MaggieMoo's and grab two free Cinnabon Bites between 6-8 PM.

Hopefully this guides you to your well earned tax day giveaways!

Junk Food Crackdown

April 13th 2011 18:05
Several cities are making it harder for their residents to enjoy guilty pleasure snacks. In an effort to promote health awareness, New York, Boston and Cleveland have come out with restrictions surrounding foods regarded as harmful to their resident's wellbeing. The foods targeted include sodas and other sugary drinks, fried foods and other items containing those scary trans fats.

Employees of New York's Department of Health recently received a new set of guidelines that spell out certain office dos and don’ts. The employees are told what types of perfumes they can wear and urged to resist the temptation of eavesdropping on others. As if this wasn't enough, this guide goes on to instruct what food is allowable at company parties and gatherings. Not surprisingly fried foods did not make the cut. It goes as far advising how to serve popcorn at these parties. The salty treat must be, 'popped at the party and served in brown paper lunch bags'. Employees are to, 'cut muffins and bagels into halves or quarters, or order mini sizes'. They also are told to offer thinly-sliced, whole-grain bread. My favorite part is that when 'celebration cake' is served, the office cannot also serve cookies. New York also is hoping to reduce its resident's general intake of salt, sugar and alcohol

School Bans Packed Lunches

April 13th 2011 00:43
Thinking back to my high school days there are certain things that I miss a lot. Playing sports and hanging out with good friends top the list. School lunches do not. In fact school lunches would be buried towards the bottom of that same list. Sure you had your good days and certain meals that those ladies got just right. On those others you always had the fallback option of packing your own lunch. You could put whatever you could scrounge up at home into a brown bag and avoid the stomach aches served at lunchtime. One Chicago school decided to take away that choice from its students.

Top Ballpark Eats

April 11th 2011 23:16
I figured what would be a better way to kick off the start of my new food blog than by combining two of my passions, food and sports. I've assembled a list of the best ball park food sold across the country.

We’ll follow the paths of ball players by starting in the minors and working our way up. Minor league ballgames are great. The tickets are much more affordable, the teams run all kinds of great promotions and they also get very creative with the grub they serve

Black Bean Garlic Sauce

Black Bean Garlic Sauce

Black bean and garlic sauce is great for steamed dishes - just like those succulent steamed spare ribs with black beans or chicken feet that they have at 'yumcha'. Not only that, black bean and garlic is also used to add flavour to many stir-fries in Chinese cooking. The aroma and taste of fermented black beans and fragrant garlic works well with many dishes, especially when steamed
