Feasting on Flesh - The Review
November 10th 2006 00:37
Feasting on Flesh brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “playing with your food”.
I’m not sure if I’ll be able to stomach pasta or chocolate cake for quite some time. Do you remember that vulgar rhyme from primary school? The one that goes, “milk, milk, lemonade, round the corner fudge is made.” Well – actually never mind…
Feasting on Flesh is an immersive, multi-disciplinary performance about the erotic nature of food. Or perhaps about the consuming nature of the erotic. Food is blended, beaten, shaken and stirred with fantasy in an unforgettable fusion of flavours.
One of my favourite moments was the musical duo between Triple J legends Gotye and Candy Bowers, half of femme hip hoppers Sista She. They performed an infectious and raucous pots and pans rap that would rival anything by Stomp. Definitely a crowd drawer and pleaser, Gotye delivers a myriad of melodic munchables throughout the entire performance with his voice, drums, piano and a tiny ukulele.
Also expect to see burlesque, spoken word, acrobatics, a diatribe on the nutritional value of semen and plenty of full frontal nudity. A truly gastronomic experience!
Feasting on Flesh explores the relationship between sensuality, humanity and food, in a whimsical and titillating tale. Far from being simply a cheap shocker, the subject is actually one that has fascinated mankind for centuries as ancient cultures have seen resemblances between food and the genitals long before questions of political correctness. Take the ancient Aztecs for example, who named the avocado “testicle fruit” for its round, soft qualities.
Feasting on Flesh promises to have a successful though short season at the Sydney Opera House and tickets can be purchased online or at the box office.
