The Echo Lounge was recommended to me by one their employees. On our visit we found there to be mixture of good and bad factors during our dining experience.

First of all the location isn’t bad. It’s only a few minutes off Church street but that’s enough to avoid some nasty traffic and noise pollution. If you go on a weekend you might even find the traffic to be primarily a horse driven cart, a popular gimmick instigated by La Porchetta next door. The restaurant is also built into a church hall so it has all the atmosphere that big old stone architecture can give you. The inside is tastefully decorated and has a beautiful big chandelier and comfy seats. There is plenty of space for outdoor dining as well.
The food itself was hit and miss. The entrée prawns were fabulous, a large helping deep fried in a kind of stringy batter which was all crispy and nice. I had lamb shanks on mash which were tender and filling but a little bit bland and could have used some more seasoning or herbs. I’m told that the other meals were of a similar caliber. I think the prices were average for a restaurant of this sort, sitting around $25 for a main. They do also have daily specials for $10 which seem like good value for a quieter night out. I’m also under the impression that Echo Lounge transforms into more of a trendy bar/club type place on weekends.
The service, however, was fairly lax and we had to wait quite a long time for our meal. Also we were disappointed that several items listed on the menu were discovered unavailable at short notice. It is possible that these failings could be accounted to the large function that was being held inside, though it didn’t seem like much food or service was required by the clients as they were just having some sort of presentation with a bit of finger food. Acknowledging the sub par service, we were offered free coffee at the end of the night as considerate compensation.
