Dorayaki - Japanese confectionary

May 9th 2008 23:49
Dorayaki

The delicious dorayaki is a Japanese confectionary and is essentially two pancakes stacked on top of one another and with a red bean paste (anko) filling.

The dough used in the 'pancakes' are mixed with syrup or honey and gives off a delectable fragrance when grilled to their customary golden brown colour. The red bean paste - with traces of solid red beans - has a sweet flavour and complements the cake brilliantly.

The dorayaki is rumoured to have originated from a store called Usagi-ya in the Ueno district of Tokyo in 1927 where it is still freshly made to this day. These days, there are many variations of the original dorayaki in Japan where the traditional anko filling is replaced with other ingredients such as mango, strawberries, cherries and many more.

Do they sell these things in Oz? I don't think they're in the U.S. Seems like it would be PERFECT for people on the go. Just stick one in your backpack for a between class pick me up or maybe on a bicycle trip. I THINK I'M MAKING A COMMERCIAL!
