Discovering Mango Seed Weavils
February 2nd 2007 11:44
After buying a box of mangoes (and happily eating half of them) we were shocked to find that some contained small creatures living inside them! They even crawled out of their little holes after we cut the mangoes up. My ever responsible mother captured the little buggies and quarantined them in a sealed plastic bag. She then emailed the Department of Primary Industries to find out if this was a threat to our ecosystem! This reply arrived a week later:

Again thank you for bringing this to our attention. The reply by the regulatory staff at Sydney Markets is as follows:
The insect described is an accurate description of Mango Seed Weevil. The pest is endemic throughout Qld & NT.
It is a pest of minor importance and detections such as that reported to you are very occassional.
The only State that regulates movement of fruit with respect to this pest is WA.
There are two growers in the NT that are monitored and acrredited as property free, and these are the only two supliers into Sydney Markets that we will certify for fruit to WA.
Details on mango seed weevil are on the QDPI website at

A mango seed weevil! Of little consequence as it does not tend to damage the fruit or produce any adverse side effects if ingested. Still, not very nice to find inside your afternoon tea. Consequently these days we no longer crave mangoes quite so often.
