Cupcakes On Pitt Short and Sweet
May 9th 2006 11:59
Cupcakes on Pitt is a charming little place nestled away in a corner of busy Pitt Street amongst the bustling corporate businesses and towering sky scrapers. Many people have happened upon it when walking to or from work and noticed the window display filled with colourful cupcakes.

These cup cakes are simply delightful! They come in many inventive flavours which are rotated weekly. These include classic staples such as chocolate, vanilla and peppermint but also exciting new varieties such as lemon meringue, Oreo cookie and chai tea. Each cup cake is delicately decorated accordingly. One of my all time favourites is the cherry ripe cupcake which is sprinkled with edible red glitter. (At least, I assumed it was edible.)
The friendly staff at Cupcakes on Pitt first secured my patronage by appealing to my vanity. The shop owner took a photo of my friend and I and blu-tacked it to the wall amongst photos of other regular customers shortly after they first opened for business. Since then it has grown rapidly and now has a solid fan base that extends from every day drop ins to large orders for corporate functions.
Many people ask, "Surely they can't sell cup cakes exclusively?", and there are a couple of other things on the menu including salad, and of course, coffee. I have heard some past customers complain that the cup cakes, sold at $3.50 a piece, are a bit pricey. I would point out that they are more like cakes than the traditional sprinkles and pink icing junk food style cup cakes usually served at children’s birthday parties. Having said this, the $5 cup cake and coffee special is definitely the most economic way of getting your sugar hit.
Unfortunately, this is not the sort of place you can sit down with a newspaper and smear your face with sweet, sweet icing. The premises is tiny and quite busy with a steady stream of people coming in and out all day. If you do nab one of the two tables squashed into the corner, it’s not a bad spot for some gossip or people observation, but if you are in search of a peaceful lunch break you’d be better off taking a short walk up the road and eating in Hyde Park.

They might have a special kind of case for gifts though because they do a lot of takeaways and functions. I'll edit the post so it includes the phone number: (02) 9264 4644
