The Cook and the Chef

The Cook and the Chef is a great little show that runs on the ABC on Wednesdays, 6.30pm. If you’re lucky enough to own a digital box top the program is also repeated at 8.00pm and 10.30 pm on Wednesdays and 8pm on Thursdays. These numerous alternate screening times are testimony to the show’s popularity.

The program is filmed in South Australia’s stunning Barossa Valley. Maggie Beer, a local foodie, teams up with the acclaimed gourmet chef Simon Bryant to create a fresh perspective on practical cooking. The pair have a great on screen dynamic that is both casual and charming. They also have a no nonsense attitude towards great food. Even better, all the recipes can be found on the ABC website.
Maggie Beer also has a snazzy personal website which can be found at this address: http://www.maggiebeer.com.au/home/
The episodes are organised around loose themes such as ‘winter comfort foods’ and ‘old favourites’ and include an interesting featured ingredient each week. Maggie and Simon present their personal recipes, utilising the featured ingredient and taking a different spin on each. They then sample each other’s dishes which look absolutely delicious. For added flavour they also often leave the studio to gain an insight into how great food is produced.
This program is tasteful, relaxing and enjoyable and suitable for the whole family to watch after dinner.
Check out this excellent show next Wednesday, a special on the power of citrus:
“On next week’s show citrus takes its place in the sun. Citrus is often considered a basic ingredient, but Simon and Maggie are convinced that it deserves more of a starring role in our kitchens. In a three-part saga, Simon adds a Mandarine tang to a tantalising Duck Curry. Maggie transforms Ruby Grapefruit into candied morsels, then ups the ante by throwing them into a Bread and Butter Pudding, resulting in a true taste sensation. Maggie also introduces us to the joys of Jerusalem Artichokes, and they too get a citrus twist. Citrus – a winter winner.”
