Chow Down Custard Apples
June 6th 2007 12:25
Today I had a custard apple. I can’t remember ever having tried one before. It was strange, and very true to the name. Slightly resembling an apple on the outside and sweet and pulpy on the inside. Unexpected was the large black seeds and strange prickly ‘after-texture’.
Here are three fun facts about this little known fruit:
1. Custard apples are native to South America but Queensland is the world's largest commercial producer.
Really Long Link
2. Did you know fatty-acid methyl ester of the seed oil meets all of the major biodiesel requirements in the USA, Germany and the European Union?
Really Long Link
3. The seeds are so hard that they may be swallowed whole with no ill effects but the kernels are very toxic. The seeds, leaves and young fruits are insecticidal. The leaf juice kills lice.. Injection of an extract from the bark caused paralysis in a rear limb of an experimental toad. Sap from cut branches is acrid and irritant and can severely injure the eyes.
Really Long Link
And as it happens, they’re amazingly versatile! Check out this link for a load of interesting sounding recipes from cheesecake to Thai curry. But at $2 each this time of year, you’d better choose sparingly.
