Chiang Mai Cooking School - A Cultural Learning Ex

May 8th 2006 13:08
Chiang Mai Cooking School is one of the best reputed Thai cooking schools in Chiang Mai, a city in Northern Thailand. For many people who wish to get more out of their trip than buckets of Samsong and a few photos of temples, an authentic Thai cooking class is a must do. You can learn popular dishes such as Pad Thai, Papaya Salad and Tom Kah Gai. Thai food is famous the world over and you can easily impress your friends with your new found skills.

The Chiang Mai Cooking school is particularly well known because it is owned and run by international TV chef, Sompon. Conveniently located near the Tha Pae Gate, the head office is only the first stop when taking an all day cooking class. My class began with a tour of the local markets where we were introduced to many exotic fruits and vegetables and their uses. Next we were taken to Sompon's custom designed cooking school which is a lovely open plan
facility with individual kitchen stations and surrounded by lush gardens.

Each class includes about five small dishes, taught by different chefs. The classes are generally organised around a theme, go for a full day and come with a complimentary cook book. A one day class costs about 990Baht (about $30AU) and though this is not amazingly cheap you must remember that all ingredients and transportation are included. Many people do all the classes

as part of a five day package.

All the teachers are very funny and entertaining as well as being skilled and helpful chefs. You can try their examples before you attempt the dish yourself so you know to add less chilli. Thai people like their food very hot! One of the most interesting things I learned was the importance of presentation in traditional Thai cooking. This was constantly reinforced by the teachers who always saved some ingredients as garnish and stressed the aesthetics of serving. One of the other class's components is a vegetable carving lesson which is very popular for this same reason.

Don't forget that you have to eat everything that you cook! Then if you are still hungry (which you won't be) you can check out Sompon's award winning restaurant, The Wok which is located at 44 Ratmankha Road, Chiang Mai .
