Cake Party!

Last week I received a most splendid invitation:
A cake party! What a marvellous idea! The invitation specified that ladies were to wear fine frocks and gentlemen in handsome trousers. This ensured that it was a highbrow affair.
”Please come to my house on Sunday afternoon, for cake. If you are of
the baking persuasion, please bring something. If you are merely of the
eating persuasion, come and eat cake. Also, please bring any friends
who may be interested in either of these roles.”
Most of the guests brought their own home made delicacies which were all neatly labelled. These included a marble cake, ‘Mary’s mis-shapen muffins’, meringues, ‘simple lemon cake’, cinnamon cookies and much, much more. I was sadly unable to sample them all. I tried to pace myself, but to no avail. By evening I was drunk on sugar and fit to burst. Several jokes were made about contracting diabetes.
There were also several activities that made the event all the more delightful. A ‘recipe card station’ was equipped with a typewriter and coloured 4 x 6 cards. Apparently it was quite fashionable for housewives to create and exchange such cards in the 70s. We composed and compared our recipes, politely commenting on how delicious they were.
It was then that the timeless ‘Women’s Weekly Birthday Book’ was unveiled to squeals of delight and surprise. It turns out that this much loved cake book of my childhood also held fond memories for several of the other guests. We devised a voting system to determine the very best cake. The controversial duck cake won, though I suspect fraud. (It was controversial because of the strange icing decorations consisting of popcorn and potato chips.)
There was also a game of croquet which prompted the boys to cry out “jolly good shot!”, "How about that collonialism?" and “Rather, old chap!” in silly English accents for quite some time. Then we decided it might be more fun to try balancing the croquet mallots in the palms of our hands. (See!? Drunk! On Sugar!)
I must say that I think the cake party was a fabulous idea, a raging success and a good time was had by all.
