Book Review - Roald Dahl's Even More Revolting Rec

May 7th 2006 04:39
Roald Dahl is best known for being a cherished author of wonderful children’s fiction. Many of his books have been made into major motion pictures including James and the Giant Peach, Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

One of the major themes in his work is one of childhood loves, food. If you have seen the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or the recent remake you will understand that Roald Dahl has a great imagination when it comes to delectable snacks. This work was supposedly inspired by a job he and his school friends had as taste testers for a chocolate company. He would dream about all the fantastic flavours and styles of candy they could make. He also kept a large, heavy metallic ball on his desk, made from the remnants of hundreds of chocolate wrappers.

There is a cookbook on the market, Roald Dahl’s Even More Revolting Recipes. Aimed at children, this cook book takes some simple ideas of sweets and snacks and turns them into all sorts of nasties! These include ‘Hornets Stewed in Tar’, ‘Grobswitchy Cake’ and ‘A Plate of Soil with Engine Oil’. There’s even a recipe for fans to make their own ‘Wonka’s Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemellow Delight’. This is a great book as all the recipes are very fun and creative, appealing to kids and encouraging them to get cooking. They are all relatively simple and involve only a little help from adults. Of course, these recipes are not only limited to the young, but can also be made by the young at heart. Some of them would make really good appetizers for a Halloween party or other theme night.

The book would also make a great present for any Roald Dahl fan because it is full of illustrations by Ruentin Blake from his novels including Boy, the BFG and the Giraffee, the Pelly and Me. Most of the recipes are also accompanied by fun extracts from the books, and many of the recipes are from within in the stories. This adds an extra dimension to the stories and helping them to come alive.

Ahh the memories. Dahl was the Irvine Welsh of my childhood.
