Benefits of the Humble Apple

They say “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” (or is it the dentist…or dermatologist?) While this is no fail safe guarantee, there are many good reasons why an apple a day is a start to balanced nutrition.
1. Research suggest that apples will boost memory capacity and your ability to learn. This has been tentatively attributed to their anti-oxidant levels.
2. These anti oxidants, coupled with the phytochemicals and Vitamin C also found in apples can help to prevent cancer.
3. A medium size apple, about the size of a tennis ball, contains 5 grams of fiber, 20% of the recommended daily fiber intake. Fibre is invaluable for a healthy digestive system! Apples contain both types of fibre, soluable and insoluable. Pectin is the soluble fiber in apples and lubricates the colon, helping to ease the elimination of wastes. Insoluble fibre is usually found in apple skin and provides bulk in the digestive tract, helping to move food quickly through the intestines.
4. Apples contain almost zero fat and cholesterol, this coupled with their fibre content makes them a healthy snack that aids weight loss.
5. The natural sugars found in apples make them delicious and sweet, and provide a sustained boost of energy. They are also a neat snack when you're on the run as they come preprepared and prepackaged.
