Benefits of Red Wine

June 15th 2006 04:15
They say that a glass of red wine each day will keep you in optimum condition. But why? What is it that separates red wine from other forms of alcohol? While alcohol has been positively demonised as far as health concerns go, red wine has been advocated as part of a healthy diet.

1. Red wine contains resveratrol, which is found in grape skins and seeds. Resveratrol may inhibit tumor development in some cancers, according to one study. Another study indicated that resveratrol aided in the formation of nerve cells, which experts believe may be helpful in the treatment of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

2. Resveratrol also increases the levels of HDL cholesterol, the cholesterol in high-density lipoproteins. HDL is considered ‘good’ cholesterol and is thought to prevent blood clotting and lower the risk of coronary artery disease.

3. LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is the baddie cholesterol. New studies suggest that the antioxidant saponin, found in red wine, may aid in reducing the levels of LDL cholesterol found in the body. Any reduction in the levels of LDL, or in its oxidation, can potentially decrease the build up of plaque.

4. Red wine polyphonol extract has been shown to significantly increase the release of endothelial nitric oxide by approximately two fold. Endothelial nitric oxide is released by the inside layer of the arteries and is useful to you and I because it may offer protection against the development of atherosclerosis by inhibiting the proliferation of smooth muscle cells into the tunic intima (which causes the arteries to narrow and harden) and by inhibiting platelets and white blood cells from adhering to the inside of the arteries.

As you can see, there are a lot of ‘suggests’ and ‘experts believe’ in this post. The findings about the benefits of red wine are relatively new and not completely proven. They are however, very popular amongst the public imagination for obvious reasons. Basically, this is not an endorsement to become an alcoholic! It is recommended that those who do not drink alcohol should not begin to do so. These benefits can be gained from a healthy diet and alcohol consumption caries several other risks.

on the back of every wine bottle, it says that it contains 'Preservatives' or something similar. Do you think that's good for you?

that always makes me wonder about the health benefits.. health nuts try to eat foods without preservatives, why not wine?
