Beautiful Avocado Benefits

May 16th 2006 07:35
Did you know the Ancient Aztecs believed that the avocado was a potent aphrodisiac? They called it the ‘testicle fruit’ due to the way they sometimes hang in pairs on the tree, as well as their shape and texture.
Testicle Fruit... tee-hee

1. Apparently experts have theorised that avocado seeds buried with Peruvian mummies in the 8th century BCE were there because they were believed to be an aphrodisiac. (surely it’s a bit late by that point? Brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘rigur mortis’)

Apparently; “Over many centuries the avocado has maintained its reputation as an aphrodisiac. During the1920's a promotional advertising campaign was launched in the United States to deny that the avocado had aphrodisiac powers. The intent of the advertising agency was to convince people of the aphrodisiac quality by denying it. The campaign succeeded.” Pretty clever reverse psychology at work there.”

2. Avocados are also an excellent source of: Potassium (1,204mg), Vitamin C (15.8mg), Folate (124mcg), and Vitamin A (1,230 IU).
NB: When used in this context ‘excellent source’ is usually defined as providing 20% or more of the daily recommended intake.

3. Avocados contain antioxidants and vitamin E which means they can be used for mild skin disorders. You can try applying avocado paste to rashes and rough skin to make it smoother.

4. Avocados also contain Vitamin B6 and fibre to keep you regular. (By which I mean they help to clean out your digestive system)

5. Avocados reduce cholesterol and so reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. They also have antioxidant ability and contain both vitamins E, C and B6, as well as potassium.

They are simply a very nutritious and delicious fruit and I have only outlined some of the most basic benefits.

I often hear avocados get a bashing because they have a relatively high fat content. But really, it’s a natural monounsaturated fat which is fine for your heart and helps you absorb Vitamin E and Alpha-carotene. Just because it is the same as the word FAT it does not mean it will make you FAT. Weight can be gained from an excess of fat, sugars or carbohydrates, so everything in moderation I say. Poor avocados just seem particularly fatty because they are a fruit and fruits rarely contain fat. But don’t worry! Its calorie content is nothing compared with KFC Chicken or McDonald's Burger.

A whole avocado contains about 240 calories, and most people would only eat about a quarter or half in a meal. Whereas an individual Popcorn Chicken, according to the KFC website, contains 380 calories and a Big Mac contains 560 calories!

I don't know what happened with the avocado in australia, but in america, it grew everywhere in the desert, and people just threw them away. There was this huge marketing push to popularize it...

imagine! Throwing them away!

"providing 20% or more of the daily recommended intake" - does this not depend on how much of it you eat?!

Are avocados still expensive here? Haven't been shopping in a while... Nature tried to take them testicles back by gale force.

Thanks for vindicating the poor things!

Your text goes hereThat's a really good question. Bananas are said to be 'an excellent source' of potassium and I assume that means one average sized banana. But you don't usually eat a whole avocado do you?
They're still expensive, but good.

Yeah, that's a really good point. They say bananas are 'an excellent source' of potassium and I presume that meabns one average sized banana. But you wouldn't eat a whole avocado at once usually? They are still expensive, but good. If only they just grew like a weed around here too!

Maybe about $20 a box...it depends where you get them from. A farmer's market would probably be the best value.

Hi, sorry about the delayed response...
I unfortunately don't know of anyone in the avocado business but I would recommend that you start looking by contacting the avocado industry body for Australia:
http://www.avocado.org.au/industry/home.asp

Hope this helps!
