Review - The Avenue Cafe Oatley
August 11th 2006 03:48
If you ever happen to be in Oatley drop in to the Avenue Café – Tea and Coffee Lounge. It’s a charming little place, reminiscent of times gone by, nestled away in an old heritage listed cottage. It is furnished appropriately with lovely dark wooden tables and gilt framed mirrors. If it is not too cold outside you might prefer to dine instead in the cheerful courtyard which seats more people than it may at first appear.

I have indulged only in some of the sweet treats on offer as they stop serving freshly prepared lunches in the afternoon. On this occasion I had a hazelnut latte and a rhubarb friand which were both very nice, the friand moist and delicious though perhaps a touch too sweet. My friend had the scones which she said were great, though may have been better warmed up. The prices are around average for a café. I think my bill was about $7.50 so I had money left in my pocket for that evening.
The service is usually curt and slightly exasperated which can be excused because it seems born out of stress rather than nastiness. My friend believes that the woman’s behaviour could be explained by menopause.
It’s a bit out of the way, but that’s exactly why the Avenue café is the perfect place for a quiet coffee and a bit to eat with friends. The lovely pleasant atmosphere is perfectly suited to Spring mornings or summer afternoons.

I have been reading your comments - and find them most interesting. Your comments on Cupcake on Pitt were insightful. I was wanting some more information on this shop (I am in Adelaide) - I looked for a web site but couldnt see one. I wanted to know if their icing was all butter icing and I wanted to know if they have nice packaging - so you could take it to someones house or give it as a gift - do you happen to know? I just love cupcakes and my sister in law (who lives in Sydney is going to bring me a sample when next she visits us. I cant wait!!

I was trying to find additional information about this place on the internet for ages and couldn't even find it listed in the yellow pages. Eventually I just ended up getting someone to grab a business card for me next time they went past.
If you want to call the Avenue Cafe the contact number is: 02 9580 6427 and you should ask for "Michael Kergis".
