Pregnant Mothers Junk

August 22nd 2007 07:33
A strange new study suggests that over eating and junk food addiction could have foetal origins. The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition involved feeding pregnant rats different diets and monitoring the effect this had on the children’s eating habits. Unexpectedly, the young rats whose mothers had been fed junk food had a greater tendency towards it and over eating in general.

I had always assumed that traits such as these were passed on through environmental habit in a child’s formative years, but this frightening research suggests that a child’s eating habits may be influenced even earlier, in the womb.

However, there is probably still a considerable amount of research to be done if the findings of this study are to be supported. Though rats’ appetites are considered comparable to humans, further study applicable to human mothers and children would still be necessary before conclusive evidence is formed.
An interesting titbit, nonetheless.

The 10th London Vegan Food Fair

August 19th 2007 07:25
My friend immigrated to London on Tuesday, and she’s already planning her social calendar for the weekend! On the list is the London Vegan Fair, bound to be a host of unusual flavours and innovative vegan cuisine.

Held in the Kensington Town Hall (Hornton Street) this event is happening this Sunday the 19th of August, rain or shine. And with the entrance fee a mere 1 Pound it’s a very affordable Sunday out. Under sixteens are admitted free so it would also be a good outing for families. And if you like to sleep in on a Sunday as much as I do, never fear for the fair is on from 10am to 8pm

Cupcake Tower!

August 9th 2007 06:33
Here’s a fabulous birthday cake idea!

For my birthday my wonderful friend slaved over a hot over baking dozens of cupcakes that were then constructed into a giant cupcake tower with candles on the top! This is a great idea for birthday cakes because they are easy to deconstruct and transport, and they don’t need to be cut up or divided. You can simply make enough for all your guests and bring the rest home for later. These tasted absolutely decadent and they looked great too

A few weekends ago I was taken along to yum cha at the Hung Cheung Chinese Restaurant in Marrickville. This was the first time I had been to yum cha in many years, and I had completely forgotten what it was like. The flurry of waiters moving throughout the crowded room, the din, the constant choices were all quite overwhelming. The fact that this restaurant becomes extremely popular and therefore extremely crowded, especially on the weekend, only added to the exciting atmosphere. The shear popularity and at least fifteen minute wait for a seat is testimony to the place’s good reputation, famed throughout Marrickville as the ‘best yum cha’ in town.

Native Fruits High in Antioxidants

August 3rd 2007 06:49
Recent CSIRO research suggests that several native fruits are very nutritious. We have heard many times about the benefits of antioxidants and how many fruits contain them, but apparently the levels found in these native fruits are particularly high.

These include

A suitably obscure author, you can actually purchase Crescent Dragon Wagon’s books through Amazon, though stock is very limited and some books are second hand. She appears to be quite a prolific writer, with several other titles on food.

Crescent Dragonwagon was only 16 when she formed a commune in a house in Brooklyn with several other idealists. The Commune Cookbook is a complete transportation into a 70s world of holistic therapy, pseudonyms, artistry and kitsch slang. The book reflects this in everyway, from the casual swearing to the descriptions and ideologies. All this makes it a very addictive read
