Punjab Curry House Parramatta

September 29th 2006 04:41
Punjab Curry House is spacious, clean and well lit, with an outdoor area for those who wish to take in the lovely atmosphere of hooligans doing burnouts along Church Street. There is also a large plasma screen over the counter that is always on. This can rather annoy me, especially when sport is the subject matter. Nevertheless at Punjab’s it adds to the atmosphere rather than detracts from it as they show nothing but Indian pop music videos which are endlessly amusing.

I was assured that I was in good hands as my dining companion was a regular. He had only just sat down when the manager swanned over with the mango lassi that he knew was about to be ordered. Another good sign was several Indian people among the clientele.

We ordered a veritable feast which we could not even finish, and all this came at only about $23 a head. I don’t think I can even recall everything that we ordered, though it certainly included pampadams, roti, dahl, mint sauce, cucumber yoghurt sauce, bananas in coconut, pureed spinach and goats cheese, vegetarian curry and half a tandoori chicken.

The service is very friendly and polite, though we had to ask for some much needed water several times. (Some kind of cruel joke?) The food wasn't too hot but this can really come down to a matter of opinion. Having said this my boyfriend looked a little red in the face after sampling the dahl he ordered, though he’s pretty soft so I’m not sure that counts. I don’t have a particularly good tolerance to chilli and I found the level of heat quite satisfactory.

We left feeling extremely full and satisfied, without any of the nasty side effects that Indian cuisine can often provoke.

Meat and Two Veg

September 28th 2006 10:21
I’m sorry if you think it crude, but meat and two veg is an English classic dinner. There’s nothing like a warm, filling meal to comfort you when you’re hungry or its cold. This one has a tender cut of lamb and the sweet potato offsets that with its lovely fragrant flavour. This is a good weeknight meal because it does take too much preparation and will give you a hearty dose of protein and vitamins to help you get through the week.

That Kooky Kransky

September 27th 2006 03:51
Now that we know just how many sausage fans there are out there, I’ve collated a few facts about a classic sausage, the Kransky.

It is said to have originated in a small Slovenuian town known as Kranj. From there its popularity spread to Australia with the post war immigrants from the Balkans in the 1940s and 50s

Feastability Food Festival Newtown

September 26th 2006 06:46
I decided to approach this festival with an open mind, despite Cibby’s comment that last year’s effort was poor. ( http://www.foodherald.com/feastability-and-brazilian-food-festival/ ) It was a warm summery day, with a hot, blustery wind and the venue, Newtown Performing Arts High school was decorated colourfully. When I arrived I decided to pace myself and sample a range of what the stall holders had to offer.

Monte Carlos Recipe

I made these to cheer up my sick little sister in hospital. Even though she had been eating very little for the past few days, she managed to get through a whole one of these!

Swiss Quattro Pizzeria Sylvania

September 21st 2006 12:46
Did you know the Swiss make pizza? Neither did I, but apparently they make most excellent pizza and pasta. There’s nothing like a big, warm cheesy pizza on a cold rainy night to make you feel all happy and squishy inside.

Tuna Fried Rice

September 20th 2006 12:23
When I don’t have much time on my hands this is a really simple dish that’s quite filling. I’m not sure if this is cheating or not, but there are dozens of excellent types of flavoured tuna in the supermarket. Tuna is filled with natural oils and omega 3. They’re really inexpensive and even the cheaper brands have quite decent tuna premixed with herbs and spices. Today I used the ‘penang curry’ variety.

The Ultimate Hangover Cure

September 15th 2006 12:36
Sometimes the making of a hangover cure can be a real art. People create all sorts of little myths about why their’s is the most effective, and pass the knowledge on as if it were a holy scripture. There is a general consensus that a decent helping of grease (or a “grease and oil change” as my TAFE teacher would say) can do wonders to settle the stomach that is punishing you for punishing it the night before. Warm favourites include bacon big breakfasts, Macdonald's French fries, oily burgers and extra cheesy pizza. (cold pizza being my hangover cure of choice) So surely a combination of all these potent elements will result in the creation of the ultimate hangover cure…?

Revised Gnocchi Salad Recipe

September 14th 2006 11:47
I’ve made this a few times now and perfected it to a fine art. This is a really delicious meal which is very filling and can be served cold and therefore can be prepared well in advance if necessary. Perfect for dinner, a picnic lunch or to take along to a function with the intention of impressing your friends or relatives.

A friend from Germany recently informed me about a scandal that has occurred over there.

“German authorities suspect that a Bavarian meat processing factory may have sold rotten meat across Germany and in other European countries, much of it for use on rotating doner kebab spits as well as in restaurants.”

The Treehouse, Lonely Beach, Ko Chang

September 12th 2006 10:43
The Treehouse is one of those amazing gems that sparkles when you find it and bears no comparison anywhere else. Two minutes between my bungalow and the beach this was my ideal breakfast destination directly from my morning swim in the climbing sun. The most magical thing about dining at this time of day is that it’s high tide- meaning that the whole restaurant is suspended above the ocean. The outdoor dining area is built entirely on wooden platforms just above the water level. These are scattered with colourful cushions for comfort when eating at the low tables overlooking the water.

Another delight is that several species of small fish can be seen lulled along by the movement of the tide just beneath you. I made a bad choice from the menu one morning, a ‘Thai style omelette’ which tasted like an egg pocket saturated in sweet chilli sauce, but was moderately consoled by the fact that I could feed it to the fish by pushing it over the side. At least they seemed to enjoy it, worked up into a frenzy in competition with one another for the spoils. In the picture you can see the fish if you look very carefully- there is one just left of the centre with a long nose and a stripy one towards the top.

Eggs En Cocoette

September 11th 2006 11:52
I love a good egg breakfast on a Sunday morning, especially because we have chickens so they are always perfectly fresh. If you ever get bored of them scrambled or fried, I highly recommend this variation. It takes a little longer but is extremely tasty.

Sausage Fans

September 9th 2006 04:29
I love sausages! I’m not trying to say anything rude here, I’m talking about the food you sickoes! Now you may think a food snob like myself may shy away from the humble bangers and mash, but for some reason I just really like sausages. Whether it be the expensive gourmet variety for dinner or a cheap load on a BBQ I find sausages to make a most tasty and satisfying snack.

Delicious Dukkah!

September 8th 2006 04:12
Dukkah is a blend of Egyptian spices with a strangely aromatic flavour. It has spread in popularity and different varieties can be found across the Middle East.

Don’t be mistaken into thinking this has anything to do with ‘dukkha’. That is a form of profound Buddhist suffering! I can assure you that eating dukkah is far from suffering. At first I found it a little strange as it was an unfamiliar blend of spices but it soon grew on me and I would now characterise it as refreshing and moreish.

Mint Mini Quiche Recipe

Mint Mini Quiche (Makes two)
These are great as a filling snack and have a lovely, light refreshing flavour thanks to the mint leaves. They could also be made even smaller as hor’deurves for a party, though remember they would then have a greatly reduced cooking time.

Kagaya Japanese Restaurant

September 5th 2006 09:11
This is one my family’s favourite haunts. Arguably the best Japanese restaurant in Hurstville, Kagaya offers plates of wonderful food at very reasonable rates. This attracts a range of clientele including locals, couples and business people from the metropolitan area. It is no wonder that it is usually almost full on any given weeknight and so bookings are recommended.
